Kitchen Oriented Christmas Gifts
I'm looking at this logically when it comes to Christmas gifts for our
kids since they all cook. It helps when I know what I like as far as equipment. For DD - I'm considering a cookie press? She has a very well equipped kitchen with more gadgets, small appliances, and what not than I will ever want or have. She's hard to buy for. I'm considering a pressure cooker for her as I know she doesn't have one yet. I got her a copy of Rachel Ray's book only because she likes the foodnetwork shows and she is a busy gal so 30 min meals would likely be appreciated. One DS - he has a small oven so I bought him smaller scale oven pans - roaster, cookie sheets, muffin pans, muffin papers, silicone spatulas, a couple of cake mixes since he likes cake but doesn't bake from scratch, a mini GF style indoor grill Another DS - he's fairly well equipped, mini GF style indoor grill, I'm considering a cast iron fry pan and non-stick (major ick) pots & pans because that is what he asked for DS & DDIL - last year we got them a really nice set of pots & pans so we know they are set that way but they have almost zip in the way of bakeware, we got them a really nice 12 piece casserole set in off white, DD said he wanted to make a pie at Thanksgiving so she had to bring a pie pan and the rolling pin so that gave me two more ideas, they like cooking with wine as well so maybe a bottle or two as well as a bottle of sherry, I'm debating getting them silicone bakeware - he cooks, she does not but is showing a little interest so I'd like to encourage her on this one On my list of things wanted kitchen oriented - shiny non-sided cookie sheets. |

An inexpensive gift that any cook would appreciate owning is a
"spider". http://www.kitchenkapers.com/kkapers2/joychen5spid.html They can be difficult to find at reqular kitchen wares stores but online, you can find them in a variety of sizes to accomodate your needs. They're great for removing boiled and fried foods in large amounts out of their liquid. |

I'm doing that too. I got a DeMarle bread pan for Christmas last year and I
just fell in love with the silicone bakeware. They are the makers of the Sil Pat and more. www.demarle.com I use my Sil Pat, aluminum cooking sheet and sponge cake pan the most, so that's what I got everyone. Hoping they just don't stick it in a closet and never look at it again. Lynne |

I have also bought kitchen stuff (along with other personal stuff) for my kids. For DD, who has everything, a LeCreuset pottery beanpot which to me looks much more like a great tureen for soups, stews, and chile. And a subscription to Cook's Illustrated. For DSIL, a wine handbook and a subscription to a beer brewing magazine. For DS (he's the cook in the household) and his SO, a microplane grater, a wine handbook, a LeCreuset fondue pot (on their wanted list), a Polish pottery teapot with a wide variety of teas. A subscription to Cooking Light and Cook's Illustrated. An instant-read thermometer. LeCreuset is having a decent sale at their factory outlet stores but be aware that if they sent you a 35% off coupon, it's only good on full price merchandise. I believe they only send you the coupon if you have bought something at one of the stores during the year. Doesn't make sense to me, but WTH. gloria p |

It's a great way to stock up young people's kitchens, especially when they first leave home. This year I've giving my son and his partner a joint gift of an electric cake mixer. They love making cakes and desserts but it's hard work for them since they only have a hand held electric mixer. For myself, I know I'm getting salt and pepper grinders. It's what I asked for.
