Foraging at the Farmers' Market
 

This afternoon, I spent a delightful hour or so meandering through the
stalls at your local farmers' market. The weather was glorious, the crowd
lively, the produce and other wares (honey, cheese, eggs, grass-fed beef,
focaccia and other baked goods) more than tempting. Unable to maintain a
firm grasp on my wallet, I returned home with bulging shopping bags and a
grin on my face.

I *do* so enjoy these weekly forays!

I am in the Southern California High Desert and a Farmers Market was
set up a few towns away only a few months back. This establishment is
only open Saturday mornings eight to twelve, and I go there almost
every week. Although I live alone and most often cook for just myself,
I often come home with two full laundry baskets of produce, fruits and
breads in the trunk of my car. Most recent "new" discovery there was
the Brussels sprouts. I've eaten these all my life, but after having
FM ones simply steamed and with a bit of butter, salt & pepper, plus a
teensy bit of sugar for the first time, I could imagine never having
tasted such a delight before. What a terrific difference fresh picked
everything is! And the breads are wonderful as well. After being
assured by the baker on how to store so that a loaf does not begin to
grow mold before I can get through it, I must have six or seven
different portion-frozen sorts now.

There's nothing more fun than the 'hunt.'
When we had a big Akita dog, who went with us everywhere, and went for food
outings, we really felt that we were doing this, going on a hunt. So
pleasurable!

I know what you mean about overbuying when everything looks/smells to good!
It's all too tempting, isn't it??!? When I realized my neck and shoulders
were beginning to suffer from schlepping heavy bags, I went out and bought
one of those "little old lady" carts. Now I can purchase to my heart's
content!

Fresh-picked Brussels sprouts, indeed, anything recently harvested are/is
the best. You can't go back . . .

Whereabouts in the SoCal high desert do you live? I'm up here in Central
CA, up under the redwoods.

Well, DUH!! There's a good reason I'm known as Mrs. Magoo amongst my family
and friends.

So okay, *our* market is open year-round. Sounds as if *your* market isn't.
