We live 40 miles north of the center of Houston, and we're staying (many
of our neighbors and friends in this area are staying as well). We're
far enough in-land that we'll be OK. Anyway, we couldn't get out now if
we wanted to. The freeways have been clogged since early yesterday.

Depending on how the aftermath is (with electricity, water, etc.), we
may pack up and get out after Rita passes (my in-laws, who live in CA,
have a house in Austin that we can go to for a few days).

Hopefully you have propane, charcoal, candles, oil lamps, etc. I haven't
been through a hurricane but I did have power knocked out for a week.
Cooking on the grill was fun. Best of luck to you and yours, Mary.

Thanks, Jill. Yes, we've got all of that covered. We'll also fill all of
our bathtubs with water tomorrow. And we plan on doing a lot of grilling
for awhile afterward...

You'll probably be fine as far inland as you are, but anything is
possible so be prepared for all contingencies, including having your
vehicle tank full and plenty of extra gasolene in approved fuel
carriers, in case you eventually need to get out there may be no fuel
available for many miles.... and it's wise to park your vehicle on as
high ground as possible within walking distance from your house and not
near any trees/power poles. Parking on your own property may be your
worst choice, instead find somewhere with easy access to an interstate,
often the streets in residential areas become impassable. And if you
own a chain saw (everyone in windstorm prone areas should own at least
a small one) have it at the ready, fully fueled, and make sure it
starts. Also have a stock of non perishable foods (cans), water (fill
your largest pots), candles, matches, flashlights, portable radio,
batterys, first aid kit, all necessary prescription drugs.

Lung Guylanders know all about storm preparedness... and not only
hurricanes, nor'easters too.

>From following the media I'm just amazed at how totally unprepared

southerners are... it's like they're brain dead, really... most
especially their elected officials, what were they thinking... oh, they
cant. Even now as I listen to the news, it's patently obvious they
have no plan, never ever even made an a attempt at a plan, NONE! For
years, for decades it was known they are located on a vast floodwater
plain, much below sea level, what did they do to protect their cities
over the decades, absolutely NADA... don't even have minimum building
codes for residences. So they built a few fercocktah berms, and have
the unmitigated gall to call them levees.. those toys r us mounds are
tantamont to building speed bumps to stop a sherman tank.

If those southerners act as slow as they talk a lotta them gonna die...
I mean they speak like five miles an hour in a 55mph zone... listening
to them stumble over their own tongues with their twangy long drawn out
draaaaaaawls gives me a headache... by the time those grits munchers
say hello it's time to go.

Don't be stupid. You don't have to be from Lung Guyland to know how to deal
with weather threats. I don't live in a hurricane area but I live on the
New Madrid earthquake fault-line. And unlike hurricanes which can be
tracked, tornadoes around here just drop down out of nowhere when weather
systems collide. That's likely when Rita hits land as the winds tend to
move east and collide with the hot weather coming up from the gulf. There
may well be tornadoes up where you are as a result of this.

I have a pantry full of canned goods. I have a stock of bottled water and I
don't put blue stuff in my toilet tanks so yes, I can use my toilet tank
water to drink if necessary. I have lump and charcoal for the grill and
wood for the fireplace. I have archaic cast iron. I have candles and oil
lamps. My car is filled up in case I have to go anywhere. Won't happen
with this storm, but you never know.

We are 150 miles inland, near Austin/San Antonio.

I'm still making sure we have water, lamp oil, candles and have stocked
up on pet food. We have plenty of canned food on hand.

I can cook on the grill if needed. ;-) I have plenty of firewood but
that will probably get wet.

But, I have some small propane tanks and a cooker to use them with.

Camping out for a week taking sponge baths would suck, but I might be
able to get a shower at work...

When I went shopping for lamp oil this morning, I hit 3 different stores
before finally finding it at Hobby Lobby.

In the meantime, I noted that there was not a single D-cell battery to
be had in town.

Anywhere.

HEB will re-stock them tonight tho' so I might see if my housemate is
game to try for a few around midnight when their trucks come in. We have
a few but it'd not hurt to have a few more.

Yeesh!

Global warming sux!

Cheers!

Italian television said that Rita will touch also Louisiana. Is it true?

Yes. The hurricane is expected to make landfall between Galveston, Texas
and the Texas/Louisiana border. That means that the eye of the hurricane
should hit in that location. The eastern edge of a hurricane is more
powerful/dangerous than the western edge. The eastern edge is what will hit
Louisiana. Even if the eye doesn't hit Louisiana, they will get lots of
rain and possibly tornadoes. The levees around New Orleans can only sustain
up to 3 inches of rainfall before they are expected to fail.

The brunt of this storm is heading towards Galveston and Houston, Texas but
Louisiana will get some fallout. Like they need more rain right now.

My BIL lives in Brownsville, TX. He told Miguel he wasn't
going to leave, but now we can't get through to him, so we're
hoping he changed his mind...

Folks, forget the batts. Get a solar/hand cranked radio and a couple
of those flashlights that you squeeze the handle to generate light or
those ones you shake to make light. I have one of each in my
bug-out-bags.

Don't forget about the one item 99.9% of the people have and never
think of. Your hot water tank. That is 40 gallons or more of water to
drink if you have to. If you run out, look in the destroyed houses.
Chances are good the tank survived.

We're just north of the center of Houston and are buttoning up for an
"interesting night".
The authorities are telling everyone to stop trying to evacuate and
"Shelter-in-place".
I that that involves placing head between legs and "kissing something
goodbye".
But we shall see how things are on Sunday morning.

Tsk!

I've known Shaun for close to 2 years now as an internet buddy. :-)
We have exchanged phone calls, and packages as well dear.
His hot sauce is wonderful...

His concern is quite real and I consider him to be a very close freind.

Real freinds can be made over the Internet. I've already had 2 offers
from Internet aquaintences to shelter with them if I was in danger in
neighboring states. Me AND the 30 cats. I'm impressed.

Hugs Shel'!
Play nice.

Are you bragging or complaining... just about anyone participating on
usenet for any length of time develops personal relationships. I have
buddies I've known on the net for more than 10 years, the day they
betray the confidence with a public announcement it's over. If that
shawn arse were a truly concerned buddy he'd not be advertising, nor
would you... seems more phony baloney, patting yourselves on the
backsides in an open arena . Groping each other in public simply
proves your relationship is not very profound.

Sheldon (sage advice to newbies; be very careful who you befriend on
the net, be especially wary of those with a propensity for morphing
IDs.)

I announced that I changed ID's several weeks ago dear. :-)
You missed the post.

This was not the list I had a problem with, so it's cool.

Apologies if that was not clear in our e-mails.

Gorgeous pics BTW.
How large will those new fruit trees get?

I got married to a man I met on Usenet. :~) You can make some great
friendships through the Internet. I think I have more real friends through
Usenet than in life - but I moved a year ago and don't know anyone in my
neighborhood, really. I know my immediate neighbors, but that's about it.
I find my friends here. :~)

No, so who'd you used to be? I hate when people change their
names, I never know if it's someone new I'm supposed to be
mean to and chase off.

<nodding> I thought you were very pleasant new comer and seemed to
fit right in. We had several exchanges that felt as if we knew each
other and I was left scratching my head - until you set me straight in
the chat room. LOL!
