Default OT Moving To California

Is It Really This Bad????

Jack was sitting in an airplane when another guy took the seat beside him.
The new guy was an absolute wreck, pale, hands shaking, biting his nails and
moaning in fear.

"Hey, pal, what's the matter?" Jack asked.

"Oh man... I've been transferred to California," the other guy answered.
"There are crazy people in California and they have shootings, gangs, race
riots, drugs, the highest crime rate..."

"Hold on," Jack interrupted, "I've lived in California all my life, and it
is not as bad as the media says. Find a nice home, go to work, mind your own
business, enroll your kids in a good school and it's as safe as anywhere in
the world."

The other passenger relaxed and stopped shaking for a moment and said, "Oh,
thank you. I've been worried to death, but if you live there and say it's
OK, I'll take your word for it. What do you do for a living?"

"Me?" said Jack, "I'm a tail gunner on a Budweiser truck in Oakland."

During the Rodney King Riots and various other riots that have happened
over the last 20 years in other california city's, Oakland remained
calm, i work in Berkeley and live in oakland, we had to shut down in
BErkeley during the Rodney King riots where young white punks were
puling people from their cars and beating them and smashing store
windows and basically running amok and when i got home to oakland things
were very calm, no rioting.

Oakland has an undeserved reputation for violence, not that it does not
have its own share of problems like any other urban centre, but its
reputation far exceeds its reality. Now richmond, if your joke had said
'im a gunner on a richmond mobile library van' i would probly have
agreed with the sentiment, just the other day, a little old lady was
watering her flowers and got shot in the head in a drive by. As far as
the police are concerned it was random and meaningless, possibly a gang
initiation, you have to have murdered somebody to be a part of certain
gangs.

Well, I appreciate your sentiment but having lived 'across the Bay' for
over 30 years I gotta take issue. I still remember quite vividly the
riots and upheaval in the Oakland area in the 60's and later. That's
not to say there weren't a lot on my side of the Bay too, but our whole
area has been a hotbed for many years.

Ever been to a Raiders game in Oakland?
Try one and you'll know.
Its a hotbed of intellectuals like Jerry Brown the Mayor.

Don't forget the National Guard in the streets of Berkeley. I have
pictures!!! But recently Oakland has been quiescent while surrounding
areas were rioting. S.F. got a lot more action in this respect over
Afghanistan and Iraq than Oakland did, though i think a lot of hard core
protesters may leave Oakland to protest or Riot else where.

LOLOL! Yes, the rest of the country really does think this and we
hope it keeps them away.
