strange plant
 

I was in Rome last february and I took several pictures in the Campo de'
Fiori farmers market. Today I was looking at the pictures and I saw on
one of them a strange plant I didn't notice before.

The plant looks like a gigantic sage with leaves about one foot long. I
have never seen it before.

Does anyone know what it is?

I posted on the Italian food newsgroup and discovered that this plant is
a sage! I have never seen it so big, but apparently few varieties of
sage of this type come from Southern America. One of the posters said
she has a sage plant with leaves up to 8 inch long. There is a recipe
for fried sage leaves in Italian cooking and she said this is the best
variety to use for it.

Your photo depicted no kind of sage plant I've ever seen, not even close, sage
just doesn't grow like that nor do sage leaves have that texture... now that
I've looked more carefully they look exactly like beet greens... you need to
substantiate your claim about giant sage with documentation from some
independant botanical site, and post the link here.

I have the large leaf sage in my orto and it looks nothing like the plant in
the picture. I'll see if I notice something like it at the market next
Wednesday but it could be specific to Ropme. I will also ask one of my
friends who is a food dfanatic in Milano if she knows of it.

There's a small town about 45 miles from Fargo named Wahpeton
(pronounced wah peh tun
accent on the wah). It's a Native American name (novelist Louise
Erdrich is from the reservation close to Wahpeton) Their foot ball
team are the Wahps but I don't know how they spell it. I've seen it on
home made cheer signs spelled: Whaps.

From the answers I understand that there is a problem with the picture.
In fact the resolution was not very good and the leaves were not very
clear. I re-published that same page with 2 pics: one the full one that
can give an idea of the proportions, the other a detail of the plant at
the maximum resolution I have.

courious. I may have to ask my sister that lives in Rome to go there
again and see if she can het some info.

I stand corrected! You are right, the picture made it difficult to see and
it it was weird because the stalks looked much longer due to the shadow on
the black plastic bag below it. Yes it looks like my sage plants. Take
two, place an anchovy filet in the middle, dip in batter and fry away.
Yummy!

Here is info with a picture of "Salvia officinalis"... looks nothing like the
plant in Anna's photo, her's is some kind of cooking green, a type of spinach
or beet tops.
