I can't imagine any down draft system being capable of properly
exhauasting stir frying, not unless you have baby sized woks.

Downdraft vents don't work well for any kind of cooking let alone wok
cooking which can produce large quantities of smoke and vapors.

That wouldn't work well for me. Not only does the high heat of a wok
stir fry generate smoke and steam, I sometimes toss the food as you do
in a saut=E9 pan. Clearance of only 36" wouldn't be enough. I'd
relocate the microwave and have a regular hood with a light fixture
above the cooktop. -aem

My son has an Asian wife and a down draft cook top. They do a lot of
wok cooking and the down draft vent is less than useless. Not only
does it NOT remove any odours or vapour, it tends to pull the gas
flame sideways away from the wok.
They are in the process of getting a proper hood installed and will
try to use the vent fan from the down draft for it.

To email, remove the "obvious" from my address.

i will be keeping the hood above the oven
and relocating the convection/microwave away from the cooktop.

now the question is whether to bother with a downdraft oven at all since
i am forced to retain the hood.
