What happened? REPOST: Knife storage - under counter?

This is very odd. I'm using google groups (not familiar with it just
yet) to post here... I didn't think I reposted anything, and yet here
this is. Please ignore it.

Sorry!

Hi Josh! Long time no post.

The repost is not your fault. Someone (apparently posting from
mindspring.com) cancelled your original post by mistake and has now
reposted it.

Regardless, google.groups, while a very useful archive, is a miserable
newsreader, like all Web-based ones. But then you know this. Get a Mac
and use MacSOUP instead. But then you know this, too.

Victor! I was waiting for you to come back and harrass me. :D I
missed you!

So... can anyone cancel any post? That seems sort of
counterproductive. And dammit I cancelled both the repost and my "what
happened" reply, and yet you and Steve still saw it and answered. What
craziness is this.

Fwiw, I am running on a Mac. (But you probably guessed that.) An
iBook. Mmm, love the Mac. We just set up new internet service here,
Matt says it's virtually unlimited (our last ISP capped usenet
bandwidth at 1 gig, I think). I'll have to poke around and see if I
can't get trn or something.

I missed you, too! Whatcha been up to? Did you get married yet, or is
Matt still hiking out there?

> So... can anyone cancel any post?

Yes. However, rogue cancels are more than just frowned upon and can
very easily lead to a loss of one's account. Besides, a lot of
newsservers don't honour cancels nowadays, rogue or legitimate.

Cool!

Get MacSOUP instead - there is a MacOS X version now. The current one
is 2.7. See <http://www.snafu.de/~stk/macsoup/>.

Naw, he came back. Cumulatively, he's hiked from Georgia to Vermont!
Probably just needs a few more months to eventually finish, but it'll
be a little trickier to get that kind of time off these days.

Yes, we got married in October. :D Honeymooned in San Francisco for a
week and a half. We got thrown out of our first hotel - they called
after a few days and said they'd been bought out, the new management
was closing the hotel, and if we needed a few numbers to try and
arrange new lodgings, they might be able to help out. Ha! The rest of
the honeymoon was great - ate some fabulous meals, the weather was
great, saw lots of neat stuff.

What about you? You married yet?

I'll check it out. Matt also offerred to set me up with some variant
of rn (slrn?).

What and where in SF??

What do you mean "married yet"?! Stacy is no longer around... :-(((
Besides, I'm an 84-year-old grandmother!

slrn is one of the better newsreaders, indeed. However, it looks and
feels positively repulsive after using MacSOUP. Everything is repulsive
once one gets used to MacSOUP!

Matt's sister has a good foodie friend in the area who gave us a whole
list of recommendations... Of the nicer restaurants, we ate at
Piperade (a Basque restaurant, I belive?) and The Boulevard. He also
recommended some hole-in-the-wall taqueria whose name I have forgotten,
and I hate to say it, but the mini deep fried doughnuts at the tourist
trap on Fisherman's Wharf were shamefully good. The slightly cheesy
restaurant in Chinatown that is on the 11th or 12th floor of some
building (The Empress?) actually gave us a surprisingly good meal.
Iirc, it came out really hot - I like food that is steaming hot, just
seems to taste better right when it comes off of the heat. We also
ate a good tasting meal in Little Italy on a Friday or Saturday night,
but the service was SO BAD, it kind of ruined the experience.

Too bad...! :(

Oh. Right. I forgot. Granny Vic.

Too bad you didn't announce it! I would have loved to meet you.

LOL! If it really was the Empress of China, it's on the 3rd floor of a
3 story building. Flatlanders tend to be confused because our "hills"
make small buildings seem taller.

Little Italy? Are you from NYC?

:)
We call it North Beach.

Sorry to hear that. What was the problem?

Heh, really? So much for my memories!

No, but I lived next to it for 7 years.

Ah well... I saw all of the Italian flags painted on the light posts.

It was just slow. Super slow. We waited about an hour after ordering
to get our meal. It took them 30 minutes just to bring us a drink. I
think they were short staffed that night - the owner showed up around
10pm to help wait tables. The food was good. Would have been even
better if it had been served hot.

I ued to love the onion soup at the "cafe venisia"? Just up the street &
around the corner from the cafe trieste. 20 years ago. But then i can
remember when the cafe flora was actualy "cool". Sometimes down right
fridged with an early fog and a wind off the ocean.

Do you remember the fog horns?

Slow service is never fun (unless you that's the way you want it)....
but waiting 30 minutes just to get a drink is very telling of
short-handedness.

Bad service can utterly ruin a good meal, particularly if you're
hosting and want your guests to have a good time. I won't go near a
restaurant if a review pans the service, no matter how good the food
might be.

There's a very well known restaurant not far from me that has almost
everything--great chef, interesting menu, interesting decor--but
terrible service, not only very slow but inattentive and inaccurate.
We took guests there twice and suffered through it both times, and they
were not isolated experiences. Reviews always note the bad service
while praising the food. The owner, astonishingly, does not care. She
made that clear to me when I stopped on our way out the second time to
draw it to her attention. So I cheerfully recommend to anyone dining
in Pasadena -- anywhere but Xiomara's. -aem

Very annoying. I stopped going to this trattoria because if they
were any more laid back, they'd be in a coma. They weren't
busy, like rushing around or anything, and boy is the place ever
small. It would take *forever* to even order an iced tea. I
guess they had to grow the tea, that's how long it would take
to get it. I hate sitting there, parched. This really slow service
continues even to the torture of getting the bill.

Fabulous food, I just couldn't take the slow service anymore.
Don't get me wrong, I don't like to be rushed, either, but come
on!
