before you get the butter. Carol In WI

Get some heavy cream and beat it with a hand/stand mixer. Won't take long
before the whipped cream separates and you have butter.

Your arms must be SORE!

A rotary eggbeater works well, and is far easier and faster than the
"jar" method...

Milk??? Butter is made from cream? Right???

We used to skim the cream from the milk our Nubian goat produced. We
milked her every morning.

Goat butter from that particular breed is actually pretty good!

We made goat cheese with Renit from the remaining skimmed milk.

When I was growing up we took the cream from unhomogenized milk.
After we had accumulated enough, we set it out to sour and then used a
rotary egg beater to make the butter. Worked well.

Not milk, Carol - cream. My husband's aunt always saved the rich cream from
their Jersey cow. When she had enough, she put it in the butter churn and
churned away with the paddle. Don't remember how long it took, but it was
good.

Butter is made from milkfat. Cream has a lot of it, milk has only a
little. But you can still get butter from it.

We tried that in kindergarten. Put a pint of heavy cream in a glass
jar, screwed the cover on tight, and passed it around the room, each
kid shaking it for as long as they could. I didn't know how to count
at the time, but there must have been over 20 kids, maybe a
skidzillion, not certain<G> Tasted real good on our crackers at snack
time...

We did that in the first grade. My teacher was Helen Foltz. A very
special lady. :)

Making fresh butter is the only way I go for herbed or cranberry
butters. It only takes a minute or so in the food processor and my arms
don't get tired. OTOH, ages ago when the kids were small and got ansy
when I was cooking, I'd put heavy whipping cream into a mason jar and
let them go at it. They got a lot of fun out of it and I got to do what
I needed to do as well fresh butter for dinner :)

Maxine, I find it interesting that a glass jar can be passed around a
group of 20 5 year olds; each one shaking the jar vigorously before
getting all tuckerd out, and then giving it to the next one. . .and
nobody dropped and broke it. Must've had quite a teacher.

Keep on churnin!

Milk? Should be heavy/double cream.

I've made butter a few times but only by accident. When
using an electric mixer to make whipped cream, it is
quite easy to whip it too much and end up with whipped
butter.

Give the kids something to do ...
put the cream in a mason jar and add a few marbles. Have them shake shake
shake :)
Great for kids while waiting on a holiday dinner. :)
(btw, I have never had a jar chip or break)
We love fresh butter :)
