That's because Walnuts are traditional. :-)

If I don't mind cracking them myself, I can pick up all the free ones I
want all over town. :-) There are even trees at the park.

The damned squirrels also plant them all over my yard!!!
I have two baby trees in the greenhouse right now I pulled out of my
winter garden bed. The remaining nut attached to the sprout was a paper
shell. Yay! I'll have to select a place to plant those once they really
get going in the pots.

If I buy pre-packed halves, they are running about $3.99 per lb.

Around here they charge about $3 for 4 oz. of crushed pecans, an arm and a leg for
whole meats.

Yikes!!!

Only if you buy in bulk!!!

I can get "loose" pistachious from Wal-mart or HEB, as few or as many as
I want, for $3.99 per lb. on sale, $4.99 per lb. regular price!

Granted, their prices are good, if I want to buy 100 lbs!!!

But, thanks anyhoo! ;-)

How about pistachio nuts?

Just tried this out, and didn't even have to bake it
myself. Had lunch last Friday at the Turkuaz Cafe
in town and they had both walnut and pistachio
baklavas. It was absolutely delicious, but I still
have a preference for that slightly bitter taste of
walnuts.

I first had baklava from Greek restaurants and pastry shops. They've
all used walnuts. I later found baklava at Arab pastry shops. They all
offer a choice between walnuts and pistachios.
