Default Sales Tax (was military commisary)

The Pennsylvania legislature is considering lowering the sales tax from 6% to
4%. BUT, they want the tax to include more items and services. Food and
clothing would be taxed. Things that also could be taxed are services provided
by doctors, lawyers, accountants, tax preparers and shoe repairers, as well as
lawn care, home repairs, physical rehabilitation and even the cost of opening a
bank account.

Heh. In Tennessee, we have a 9.75% sales tax. That includes everything;
clothing, food, meds. We don't have a state tax, which is what covers food
and clothing in PA. When I shop in PA I'm always surprised I pay only what
the price tag says.

But they propose TN should have state tax on top of the enormous sales tax.
This is one reason I shop online; purchases from stores not located in TN
are not subject to our ridiculous sales tax. And if I can find an online
coupon for free shipping and other discounts, so be it! Long live the
Internet!

But are they subject to a use tax? In MN I'm supposed to report stuff I
didn't pay tax on that I would have if I'd bought it locally. I do it
all the time.

Well, I think I'd tell them I bought it but I'm not going to use
it...it's just going to sit there, so I'm not paying the use tax. <G>

Never heard of a Use tax before. Does this apply to the seller or the
buyer? Hmmm. Must be some funny MN law. I sure never paid a use tax for
the wild rice you or Dams sent to me

Yep. The person was admitting to use tax evasion.

There's the TN state USe tax form for consumers.....

Seems they've been expecting TN residents to pay it since 1947...when
it was put in place.

The internet is specifically mentioned at a place they expect people
to pay USE tax.

I guess welcome to National Health Care. You pay one way or another.

I actually don't mind paying the extra 7% anymore. When the GST first came
out (in 1990 or 91?) it seemed like we were being gouged, but now I'm just
used to it. And I like not having to pay upfront for medical care and
getting cheaper drugs, even if I do have long waits for some things (MRIs,
CT scans, certain specialists but not blood tests or x-rays). My friend in
TN said the cheapest health insurance she could find (she's single and 30)
was $600/month. That's $7200/year and I'm quite certain I did not pay
anything close to that much in taxes last year (provincial, federal, pst and
gst combined--I didn't work much last year, though, nor did I spend much on
non-food items). It's a good thing she got a good full-time job so she was
able to get health insurance through her employer. She still has to pay,
but not nearly as much.

I would mind a whole lot if I had long waits for things like MRIs, CT
scans and specialists, seeing as how some of those special things were
what saved my son's life and have helped with my husband's diagnosis
when he was terribly ill.

That's insane. We paid that much for our whole family at one point,
but with the work situation that Rich had, we ended up paying about $250
a month, and now don't pay anything but our deductible and co-pays.
However, it is much cheaper to get insurance as a group (either through
business or some other organization) to bring down premium costs, and
individual policies not affiliated with a group are just much more
expensive. Imagine what it would cost you for your health care premiums
if your province and nation weren't all paying in for a group rate.

Regards,
Ranee

Another Manitoban, or is this Alan B by a different name? Are you in
Winnipeg or elsewhere?

I'm going to Edmonton for just one day. At first I had only planned to do
what I had to do, eat, and leave, but then I decided I should do some
shopping there. That way I'll only be paying 7% tax instead of 14%!

Not me my spelling isn't that good. And I'm used to the tax too...my only
gripe is I wish it was included price of the item, so when it says 2 bucks
you know its 2 bucks and not $2.28 at the till.

You mean we might be able to have a cook-in with more than three people :-).
Now if only I had more time...I'm still nowhere near being ready to leave
and I have to start sending stuff soon!

In Wisconsin all of the above items are taxed at 5%, some counties also
charge an additional 0.5%.

In Hawaii, we don't have a sales tax; we have a General Excise Tax, which is
4.1666666666666666666666666666666%. Our items get taxed every step of the
way. From when it comes air/boat to the supplier, to the wholesaler, to the
retailer. What would have normally cost $2.00 ends up in the consumer's
hand at almost twice that amount. Technically it's NOT legal (double
taxation laws), but who's going to argue when you need a loaf of bread or a
tank of gas?

Isn't this almost exactly what the colonies bitched about to England
before the revolution?

If it's not legal then some enterprising consumer group should be able
to challenge it successfully.

Do you have a state income tax?

Ha! Go to
http://www.projo.com and look at the story on tax deadbeats in
RI. One is about a bakery that sells bagels - a bread item.

If a single bagel is sold whole, it's taxable - but if the bagel is
sliced on premises in front of the customer it's not taxable. Nor is a
half dozen of bagels taxable, but if you only by 5 bagels it is taxable.

RI Tax code like that of other states is horribly complex. It's no
wonder we're so hostile to business in this state.

This morning, I heard Governor Rendell on the radio. He said he opposes
the idea and instead suggests that slot machines be legalized.
