I would have to say my Mom used to make the worst 'chili' I've ever tasted.
She used to mix 2 cans of red kidney beans with 2 cans of Campbell's tomato
soup, 2 soup-cans of water and a pound of browned ground beef and called it
'chili'. UGH.

IMO, chili is supposed to be thick and meaty; it's supposed to have some
body to it and a little heat. This was Campbell's 'Chili Beef Soup' before
Campbell's decided to make it. (laughing) And even they took it off the
shelf and remade it into a 'chunky' soup

Pretty much anything my mother cooked ... I don't know how she would do it
... but she would figure out a way to take the flavor out of food! She added
butter to everything "to make it better" I often wonder if that isn't what
made it worse.

Well, mymom used to make a cassarole, tha we kids used to call , for some
reason, Spanish Moss.. It consisted of Hamburger, rice, curry powder , and
mushroom soup.

Actually , in retrospect, it was not so bad, but I do not feel a nerd to go and
make it myself.

The first time I had home-made pizza. Yikes...she who will remain nameless
made a crust out of Bisquick. Topped it with some Ragu, thick Velveeta
slices and little rolled-up anchovies. It was enough to earn a Dean Scream.

Thankfully, this was a one-time horror. Most of my childhood meals were
good and wholesome. And a little boring.

Well, it's well established that my mother's curried beef is my idea
of a bad meal, but now there is no such thing as a bad meal for me.
Whether at home or in a restaurant, if I don't like it, I won't eat
it. Wasn't like that when I was a kid, you got a nice big serving
of whatever and you sat down and ate it. Clean your plate. Most
of the time that was okay.

Boarding school food. All of it. For eight years. Yet we ate it up; we
were young, growing, heavily exercised and allowed little in the way of
cakes and candies. Plus we were required to clean our plates. Made me
grateful for every subsequent good meal!

Prepared properly those "burgers" are the best eating ever... a favorite meat
loaf mix, formed into thickish oval pattys, dusted with flour, dipped in egg
wash, coated with seasoned breading (cracker meal is good), and fried slowy in
oil until cooked through and golden... pan drippings made into gravy, serve
with mashed spuds... make lots, they're addictive. Prepare lots of gravy and
can also be cooked a la Salisbury steaks. Naturally ya gotta grind yer own
meat... granny prolly used mystery meat - blech!

That's exactly what you're describing... smothered steaks or Salisbury. I
love it! Had some for dinner Friday.

Seems moms win this one. Mine used to deep fry everything. Even *fried*
eggs. She would use Crisco and baste them with it, they turned out crunchy.
I've turned out some pretty, um, interesting meals myself - most of which
ended up given to the dog or in the disposal.

Went to lunch one day with my mom when she still lived here and she was all

When I owned a restaurant (AAA 4-diamond) one of our chefs put it on the

I guess liver & onions is some kind of traumatic childhood memory for
some. I was past 30 when I first had the dish at Original Joe's in
San Francisco, liver medium rare, bacon crisp, onions soft. It's
delicious

Stew made out of pounded okra, too much salt and going-off pork, now
*that's* a bad meal.

Cheers,

And some people really like beets -- and I do not understand why. :-)

Mom used to cook liver occasionally. Awful stuff. For openers, I think
she might have used pork liver for economy--and it's bitter, I'm told.
And she'd fry it to a faretheewell. No juicy meet for her, by gum!

A cook where I worked gave me good advice for frying liver -- be sure
it's thinly sliced, dredge it in flour, and cook it fast and hot on both
sides. Juicy and tasty.

The smell is pretty disgusting, IMNSHO. Grilling it outside takes care
of that.

I recently ate one that consisted of canned green beans, a boneless ham

A college roommate from Ohio brought his mom's lasagne recipe for us
to make. It involved lasagne, Campbell's tomato soup, ground beef,
cottage cheese and mozzerella. I thought he was joking when he
pronounced it "luh-zag-nee", but now I'm not so sure.

I worked in a place that had a large cafeteria, food was quite good,
usually. But, the only time you knew what was on the menu for lunch
as you were walking up to the building ... not the cafeteria, the
building ... was when they made liver and onions. I swear they
would vent it outside to avoid making the cafeteria staff nauseated.

I'm no dictator, but liver is the one thing I refuse to have brought
into the house. And liverwurst. No. And cook it in the house?
Ah hahahaha! Uh uh.

I had something similar this last week, when I was visiting a friend
in Houston. Her family is Italian in origin, and suppposedly what she
served me, was a family recipe that her grandmother originated.
She made her own dough, and that wasn't bad, from what I could taste
of it, But the topping. It was tasteless, had sardines on the
bottom, and almost no spices. Supposedly there was a tomato sauce
somewhere in there. There was supposed to be cheese on top, but I
would swear it was some of the junk out of those green cans.
I managed to swallow enough of it to not hurt her feelings, but it
really was awful.
And she thinks she is a really good cook, a gourmet cook at that!

If I had taste in my ass I might like liver :-)
I love liverwurst and pates. I have had liver cooked with a gary type sauce
that was pretty good, but any time I have had liver and onions the texture of
the liver has been disagreeable.

How could I possibly forget aboutthe meal my kids STILL talk about. They bring
it up at every opportunity, It was a dinner consisting of lver, and my neighbor
gave me turnips from his garden. They hated it, I was so mean I made them sit
there till they ate it, I think at least one of my kids is still out there in
the kitchen....I do not know why I made them eat it, I was a mean mom I guess.

I didn't have time to make my lunch for work last night....so I went to the

got something that was made of "air bread" with some sort of a crust, lots
of iceberg lettuce, some slices of tomatoes, chicken pieces and a nasty
tasting sauce....never again...next time I'll go to the Pavillions store
across the street and buy a can of dog food....

My mother, who grew up in the 40's and 50's, told me of going to a
restaraunt with her parents once when she was a girl. On the menu was
"Velvet Steak". Imagine her shock when liver and onions came to the
table.....

In order of will-not-eat these:
Grits - Similar to Elmer's Paste with sand
Stovetop stuffing
Liver - it's a texture thing
Urchin - again, it's a texture thing
Undercooked poultry
Overcooked beef
Any "seasoned" fish - if I can smell it before it arrives at the table,
don't serve it to me.

Well. rfc is pretty chatty, and we all have stories of bad meals (and
from the length of the thread so far, many willing to share), but why
concentrate on the negative? "What's the worst thing you've ever
eaten?" is thought-provoking, but what about 'good' meals? Perhaps not
the best in the sense of perfect wine/pefect dish, but maybe a memory
of good company, or a great potato salad at an an otherwise
unremarkable picnic, or the first time you tried some really good
thing?

I think that's an excellent idea, but that you should start it as a new
thread. This one has got very long and probably a lot of people are bored
with it and won't read any additions.

What's the worst meal usually morphs into what's the best meal,
eventually.

In my answer, I neglected to say the bad meal ... I was served a
rare half chicken at my ex's cousin's place. Was a masterful job
I did, making it look like I ate that thing.

Best meal? Hmmm. Oddly, I've eaten at way fancy, how many star
restaurants, and I really don't remember what I had. But I did have
a fabulously memorable meal at a motel restaurant in Newton, Mass.
The most outrageous Caesar salad and chateaubriand I've ever had in
my entire life.

As far as the occasionally I gotta have it, but it's not some
gourmet thing ... Pork chops and kale, Italian Wedding soup,
cardoons, I could go on, from my ex mil's kitchen. No wonder she
didn't get why people went out for dinner. She made also very
fancy meals at home, but it's the day to day stuff I remember.

I think I can relate... I cooked really bad burgers when my granny died and
Mom left me in charge of the house and cooking for my dad and my brother.
They gamely tried to eat but truly, they were raw. I think I cooked them
about 5 minutes total (laughing) Hell, I was 16 and had never cooked
anything before in my life. It was quite a challenge. I took one bite and
said, "Why are you pretending these are good?" and scooped up the plates and
put the burgers back in the skillet for another 10-15 minutes.
