Don't people tend to mellow with age? Unless dementia makes them lose
social inhibitions, that is.

Nope.

They slow down of course, but like Cognac they concentrate to a more
potent version of who they were when they were younger.

Beats me but it's all documented and frozen in time. What we are witnessing today will still be fresh, alive, and relevant, one hundred years from now and longer. The posts can be mined to give some valuable insight into the attitudes and mores of our society as well a view into the disturbed minds of individuals. I've always been on this group with an eye towards the long haul i.e., my posts are meant to be found and read by my descendants.
That's the way I see it. Maybe nothing will come of it. That would be a shame. Perhaps in 100 years, "RFC - The Movie" will be a giant hit!

Respect and manners are for the living. It's not like I'd go to someone's
funeral and talk smack about them to their relatives.

Let's ask a slightly different question: Why is it the custom to not speak
ill of the dead?

Two possibilities immediately come to mind:

1. Superstition
2. A desire not to be spoken ill of oneself, when one is dead.

I'm not superstitious, and I won't care what people say about me after I'm
dead. I barely care now.

Respect? Somehow it does not feel right. Sort of like hitting someone
when they are already down. The dead person has no way of correcting you
if you say something lacking judgement or veracity, so to be 'impartial'
it behooves one to apply the deceased person's presumed point of view to
interpersonal transactions.

more like you didn't have the nerve to speak ill of them to their face
when they were alive. That's the number one reason.

Is that why we celebrate MLK and Presidents' Day?

So just polluting the general populace milieu is a free pass on manners?

Iow, it's all about YOU and nothing else matters, yes?

I guess we can cancel Presidents Day and Guy Fawkes Day too then.

I mean what's more fun than a society that runs on Howard Stern
behavioral rules?

That's an insightful thesis - so the cynic gets cynicism, and the
optimist the icing!

I like it.

Like for like.

Truth be known The Mick gave as good as he got, often he gave
better... he truly enjoyed the banter... and he was wise enough to
know that no one made him lose his legs and his life. No one lacked
the nerve to give him what-for because in most arguments they
knew they'd lose. I still miss him.

Yup, agreed, blake "no legs" murphy knew how to score points in a discussion. As someone who liked to "bait" him, he was a "worthy opponent", smart and never boring...

And he didn't crybaby either, ISTR someone here called him "Murph the Surf", mocking him that since he had no legs and so couldn't surf...he handled that with a sense of humor and aplomb...thus I respected the guy. If in real life he had ever needed anything, I would not hesitate to assist If I could have...

Now we're left with the likes of Poi Boi aka "The Shifty Hawaiian", a sign that Usenet has truly degraded, he has a huge "KICK ME" sign plastered on his ass, and yet whines like a spoiled little girl when anyone kicks him...lol...

Is that what you tell yourself? What did you expect him to do? If he
wanted to stay in the group he had to accept all the crap that was
handed to him. You're so precious. No one wants to be targeted that
way. Thy would rather be treated as though they were no different

Those are just days when the mail isn't delivered and the banks are closed.

Oh, and you can buy appliances and stuff on sale on Presidents' Day.

Huh, so they ought to be named "national no mail and banking day"?

Silly me, I thought they were about recognizing actual American heroes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin...r_King_Jr._Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King,
Jr.,[1] and sometimes referred to as MLK Day) is a federal holiday in
the United States marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is
observed on the third Monday of January each year. Born in 1929, Rev.
Dr. King's actual birthday is January 15. The holiday is similar to
holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The earliest Monday
for this holiday is January 15 and the latest is January 21.

King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil
Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and
state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon
after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the
holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later.
At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it
alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially
observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington's_Birthday

Washington's Birthday is a federal holiday in the United States
celebrated on the third Monday of February in honor of George
Washington, the first president of the United States, who was born on
February 22, 1732. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971 moved this
holiday to the third Monday, which can occur from February 15 to 21,
inclusive.[1]

Colloquially, the day is also now widely known as Presidents' Day
(though the placement of the apostrophe, if any, varies) and is often an
occasion to remember all the presidents.[2]

The day is a state holiday in most states, with official names including
Washington's Birthday, Presidents' Day, President's Day, and
Washington's and Lincoln's Birthday.[2] The various states use 15
different names. Depending upon the specific law, the state holiday may
officially celebrate Washington alone, Washington and Lincoln, or some
other combination of U.S. presidents (such as Washington and Thomas
Jefferson, who was born in April)

SFW?!?!?

What kind of nation do you think you'd be living in without these men?

And why are you so eager to tear down and demean US history?

That's self-defeating narcissism for someone who works in the defense
industry, isn't it?

If you think those days mean anything but "no mail" and "blowout sales"
to 90% of Americans, you're deluded.

Private-sector employers don't give those days off work. Stores aren't closed.
Everything but the government and banking rolls on as usual.

Do you even live in the United States?

Oh no, not as perfect as Christ then?

Drat!

Well that hangs it, back to Jim Crow laws and a DemoTurd in every Klan
