One could call anyone else's hobby a money toss, I suppose.

Sure for some. The payoff is in enjoyable time.

I built a lot of furniture that is in regular use. Some could have been
bought cheaper.

I built this about 15 years ago and is still used on my front porch

I built two and gave one to a friend.

Nice stuff. Some people have expensive hobbies. Thanks to my years of
horse back riding I know a number of people who have the horse bug.
Boarding a horse in a barn with an indoor arena runs you around $500-600
a month these days. Then there is the vet bills, the farrier, tack,
trailering to shows. The option is to buy a large and expensive piece
of property with a barn and spend all your spare time mending fences and
shoveling shit.

My friend's breeds show dogs. They currently have four dogs. They spend
at least $500 a month on dog food. Then there are the vet bills, travel
to shows, grooming etch. The had a litter last year, sold 6 for a lot
of money and did not even break even. Never mind the full time job
looking after them.

A beauty!!! Did you use teak or white cedar?
I have been donating my woodturnings to charity. Marketing them is too
tedious and I had enough of that when I was working.

They were cypress. I never sold anything. That would take a hobby and
turn it into a job. I've made a couple of things for others and they
paid for the wood but one stipulation was no deadline.

In my case there are only so many friends and relatives to whom you can
give a bowl and I have a couple of dozen rough-turned ones that are
drying. I turned about 75 coffee scoops before xmas that were donated to
a foodbank drive to go with donated coffee. That was quite satisfying.
