Congress is far more influential than the president in lawmaking. Those
are the people to watch. That might have been your point but it's unclear.

You missed the point. Wealthy people don't carry a credit card
balance. I charge everything I can on my three credit cards and I have
almost a million airline miles banked between them. When the payment is
due, they are on auto-pay for the full statement balance so I don't have
to write any checks.

It's up to politicians to close the loopholes that the corporations
are using.

Starbucks Netherlands made a big profit. But they said that the profit
was equal to what they had to pay Starbucks UK for the use of their
recipes. Profit zero, no taxes paid. Starbucks UK didn't have to pay
taxes over profit made on their recipes. That's tax exempt there. No
taxes paid.

Just an example.

Congress members will never close loopholes because they are in debt to the lobbyists who
contributed to their election. I will say again: campaigns...ALL campaigns...should be limited
to six weeks' duration, and a total budget of $50,000. That would fix a lot of ills.

That auto-pay and online banking/payments are great, aren't they?? I've got
some older friends that I can't convince to set up their bills either as auto-
pay or at least pay them online. Saves postage and saves a trip to the post
office. Even if you put your bills in your mailbox for the postal person to
pick up it still saves time. Never a worry about your payment getting lost
in the mail or making sure you mail it off 7-10 days before it's due to make
sure it gets there in time to avoid a penalty.

NEVER do Autopay!! I make 'em snailmail me a paper bill, and I love it best when I can go to the Web, type in a URL or have one Bookmarked, log in and pay the bill via my Discover card!

How environmentally unfriendly having them snail mail anything
needlessly. The paper, the staff, the mail truck ...it goes on and

My company doesn't have a receptionist anymore, and neither did my
husband's (before he retired). You can get a directory of employee
extensions, but if you've called in and just want "support" or "sales"
I think you're screwed.

It's better to try to reach us by e-mail (where you can reach "support"
or "sales"). That works well for most of our customer base, who are all
engineers.

Don't be any more stupid than we already know you are. No need to type in a
URL every time you want to pay a bill. You can add that company to your list of billers on your checking account. When you want to pay the bill, just log
into your checking account, click the billers name, fill in how much you want
to pay and when, click pay, and done.

I don't need a bill snail mailed to me either; I can opt for them to send me
a bill online. No extra paper to have to shuffle through, making sure my
name and address are shredded and then having to throw away. I've been on
autopay with my utility companies for 20+ years and never once, not one single
time have I ever encountered a problem. That autopay can be stopped with a
single click.

However, my utility companies still send me the bill, for my records, each
month. Each bill also plainly states "Do Not Pay, $XX.XX Will Be Automatically
Drafted on ______________." (Fill in the date for whichever bill it is.)

Haven't you proclaimed to be some sort of computer whiz here in the past?? I
guess your statement above just shot that fairytale in the foot.

Itsjoan, you,can always ask to speak to someone whose first language is English. I have
done that several times.

Also, as soon as the voice mail tree starts, I start pressing zero. If the voice wants to know
what the call is about, I just say "Agent," or "Representative," repeatedly until it
gets a live person.

(On another topic, the half hour flood DVD is the one on which the American Experience hour-long
was based. It is worth the money to me. Also, the whole David McCullough program
is on YouTube, and I have a friend who has put it on a DVD for me. ;-))

In the near future, you'll be talking to robots. It will be just like talking to a human. My guess is that the company you're calling will know who they're dealing with and will customize the interaction to suit your style. Maybe you can have your robot call their robot.

I did that back in December when asking for address to wire money to pay off
my car. After I was put on hold it was a good 20 seconds before someone
came on line. I guess it took that amount of time to transfer me back to the
USA. Both people I talked with had Indian accents while the second one's was
not nearly as strongly accented as the first person.

I've done that as well with only one or two recordings telling me that is not
a valid selection.

I stole a joke from Steven Wright to use on my cell phone telling
callers that they have reached my cell phone but I am home, so please
leave a message and I will call you when I go out. My son and a few
friends thought it was funny. It confused the hell out of an old lady on
a committee I serve on so she called the house and tried to explain her
confusion to my wife.

That's pretty funny. I wish I heard that message but it seems like you've ruined it for me forever.

I love that guy. I hope never to meet him. It would just ruin my image of him!

Sounds good to me. With a budget like that my phone won't be ringing
off the hook for months.

Ummm...you can set up autopay and have it charged to your Discover card,
if they offer that option. Paying with a credit card that you don't pay
off every month is bad economics when you are rich.

BINGO! I have my dental insurance premium charged to my Bass Pro Shop card
then I've got that card set up automatically to be paid each month. It's a
rewards card that I'm racking up points on.

Oh shut up, you're so whacked out of your mind half the time I'm surprised if
you even remember to brush your teeth much less visit a dentist. But that's
ok, deflect the conversation with a rant but get back to us how wonderfully
you go from site to site to pay your bills.

Not for me. I've taken my dental insurance company to the cleaners
with all of the crowns, bridges, and implants I've had over the years.

Helps that it's subsidized by my employer.

And, yes. When they were handing out the genes for good teeth, I was
standing in the line for curly hair.

Cindy, I am right there with you. LOL. Including the curly hair. My insurance has already paid
in 2019 more in benefits than my annual premium (also subsidized by pre-retirement
employer). I have outlived my body, including my teeth. ;-))

I read about one that made me laugh. "Hi, this is Bill and I'm at
home. In a moment I'll hear your voice then I'll have a decision
to make."

Key words there - "subsidized by my employer"
Benefits beyond salary make a huge difference in spendable
income.

So you don't see it as good that I cost them more than
I pay in, thus reducing their profits?

Yep. That's why I went to college and got a degree
in a STEM field. So I could make a decent salary with
benefits on top, and my employer can take all of the risk
and deal with all of the headaches.
