Apologies if this has already been discussed in my absence but came
across this today:

I quite like ranch dressing on certain salads, but I am fairly sure this
would be a disgusting flavor of soda (and had the same thought as the
caption on the photo).... Not available in my neck of the woods (which is
probably a good thing). Anybody tried it?

I'll pass on that. We had a Runnings store in town and they had a huge
soda selection with flavors like that. I did try the bacon root beer.
I'd rather have a bacon sandwich with a good root beer on the side.

Ah root beer. Loved it as a kid. Must admit I haven't bought or even
looked for it in decades. Must do next time I shop.

I love both separately but PLEASE not combined in a drink.

Heck yeah, Nancy2. That was me in my senior year of high school.
Not after a movie for me but after a long morning of surfing. We
would leave the beach about 11am after surfing for hours....drive
about 1 mile to A&W. It was the drive-in like you
described....metal tray hooked on drivers window. We both ordered
a frosty rootbeer served in a glass mug and an order or two each
of their onion rings. They cooked them so well. That year was the
first time I even had onion rings.

These days I make them at home and deep fry occasionally using a
tempura batter. Frozen store ones are not so good.

common to meet some of our friends there after a movie or a dance.

They originated in my town and one of the best things about being a teen
here was A&W and cruising through over and over on Friday nights. Loved
their food then, still do, but don't have it often. They have vintage car
shows in the parking lot during the summer now, but no car hops anymore. I
would say hands down that they have the best root beer and also make the
best onion rings I've ever had. Truly nostalgia.

You can get A&W Root Beer in cans. It's pretty much the same stuff i.e., smooth and not the least bit jolting. Their diet root beer is pretty good too.. They don't taste like any other root beer on the market. It would be difficult to come up with a smoother, more non-offensive drink.

My wife loves A&W root beer and considers it to be the best. I never
cared for it much. There was an A&W across the street from my high
school and the choice was root beer, orange or no soft drink at all, so
I had the root beer. These days I rarely drink pop, and when I do, root
beer is way down the list for me.

Yes.... smooth. That's what I don't like about it. I prefer a soft drink
with a bit of a bite. Maybe it's because when I was a kid one of my
favourites was ginger beer, which is hard to find these days. I will
blame the lack of supply on a lack of demand resulting from people
looking for that smoothness.

I can see people finding it to be too smooth. It has the same excitement level as milk.

There's a A&W two miles from me. Their onion rings are still great.
Rather than a carhop, there's a drive up window. I still buy A&W root
beer at the supermarket.
We do have a old timey burger joint named Scoopers that has carhops.
The place gets pretty good reviews. I suggest a Mighty Mike if you ever
come to Sparks and eat there. It's a unhealthy, decadent and tasty sort
of bacon wrapped hot dog.

I haven't been to Sparks for a long time, folks moved to Reno for awhile
many years ago after selling the ranch and bought the Cabana Motel. I don't
know if it's even there anymore.

If it was at 370 West Street at W. Highway 40 (old west-east interstate
route through Reno and long ago bypassed), it is. I just googled it
That would have been a prime location before I-80 killed the traffic
in, let's say, the early eighties.
Now, the land alone should be worth decent money. It's located a block
west of the Silver Legacy and Eldorado casinos on 4th Street (Hwy 40)
and smack in the middle, between them.
I know you were dying for this information which could easily be wrong.

Yes, that's the one. They kept it for about 3 years or so and we visited
often. There used to be a wonderful buffet in Sparks that we always went to
when we did.

Not tried it and never will. I don't care for sodas or ranch dressing.
Could they think of anything with a worser sound to it though?

I wouldn't. We had a turkey dinner soda here for a while. People who tried
it said it was disgusting.

Yeah, I suppose it falls under 'buy it for novelty/display only' purposes
(read: let's have a laugh). But I guess enough people bought these to
