Have you seen Murder in Paradise? It's pretty good.

No, I haven't. As to the question about gruesome murders, the shows I
watch aren't particularly gruesome. They're whodunits.

The new season of The Crown starts next week, as well. The 15th, IIRC.

Victoria, The Crown, and Midsomer Murders are commercial productions,
not made or broadcast by the BBC.

BBC is only one of numerous British TV producers and broadcasters. The
others are independent, commercial companies funded by advertisers sales
and investors.

Does it really matter? The point is quality programming. Good writing,
good acting and - for me - the costumes! It's nice to be able to see
these shows in my little corner of the southern US.

My wife loves that show but I don't have the attention span to sit and watch stuff like that. My recommendation is, if your quaint little English town or tropical island has a member of the community wiped out every single week, you'd better get your ass the hell out of Dodge pronto! Mostly, I'll just see a minute or two of the show and then tell her who done it. I suppose that's rather annoying behavior.

If UK commercial companies (funded by selling advertising time)
produce quality programming with good acting etc.... why doesn't the
USA?

Because they think the American public is dumber than a box of rocks and can't
maintain an attention span longer than 30 minutes. They think if it's not
anything any better than stupid comedy shows, reality and competition as well as 'talent' shows then we won't sit still to watch.

Many of the victims seem to be expats or visitors, so their early demise
is not going to have much effect on the breeding demographic on the
island. You should also not that it is a Caribbean Island, and most
islands in the region have high murder rates but still manage to see
population growth.

I don't have Netflix and HBO is not one of the premium channels I have selected
in my DirecTV premium line-up. Whenever they have the free HBO/Showtime/Cinemax
etc. week-ends I check to see what's airing and usually nothing that outstanding.

You're probably right about that. Our cop shows are pretty much in the same vein. The cops here also have that laid-back island style/mentality.

It does. It's not to Jill's taste, but there's lots of good stuff. A
lot of it comes out on premium cable channels, but there's some on
broadcast television.

I don't watch Hawaii Five-0. It totally insists upon itself. Too much bang-bang, boom-boom.

I can understand the appeal of "Death in Paradise." It moves the genre of the brilliant, small time detective in the quiet English village to a locale more exotic. It moves from the quaint, proper, and reserved to the loose, laid-back, and exuberant. From the cool/cold to the warm/hot. That, in itself, is brilliant. I believe that the first show of the 8th season was just shown. Looks like a fun show but with my attention span...

Neither of you are missing anything good, imo. The old series was
so-so. Then they brought back a remake in 2010...I watched a
couple of the new episodes and.....boring to me. I did like
"Wo-Fat" though in the old series, the old arch enemy. "So
McGarret, we meet again." lol

If you want a fairly decent crime show, check out "Criminal
Minds." I've only watched a few episodes but the ones I did watch
were top notch. hth

I have been watching re-run of The Sopranos on the satellite movie
networks. I have to keep reminding myself that it is a soap opera.

I won't watch any of the "soap opera" shows. If the episode
doesn't end and is "continued next week," I won't watch.

What kinda skilet?

I'm currently trying to remove all the caked-on residue from a Wagner
"0" 10" (bottom) skillet.

About half done. I'm using a 3M "paint and rust stripper" on a DeWalt
battery drill motor to get the pan down to bare metal.

the only one I watch is NCIS Los Angeles. I like the characters and
the actors.

I prefer NCIS but it has become very formulaic.

Don't underestimate them. They might surprise you. I was not interested
in watching The Sopranos when it originally aired. I had no interest in
viewing a program promoting the Italian crime family stereotype. There
was so much hype about the last episode that I watched it. As strange
as the ending seemed, I realized that it had been very well done. I
then borrowed the DVDs from the library and watched the whole series. I
have seen most of it again in re-runs. It's pretty good.

I couldn't keep up with all the character changes and now that Abby is
gone the punch is gone. I watched a couple of times with the new lab
person and was dismayed at the characterization as played out. Hokey

How the heck should I know? I don't work in the entertainment industry.
I am not an actor or someone who produces television shows. There are
some really good quality shows on American PBS. I just happen to enjoy
some of the dramatic shows produced in the the UK. I have no idea why
you have a problem with that.

Happens with most shows. The core characters leave, the writers run out
of good ideas for plots. Time to just say goodbye. Leave on a high note.

I find some of the reality shows interesting for a few episodes, maybe a
season, but how many times can you make moonshine, or shoot an alligator
and still be interesting?

That was my Lodge 9" cast iron skillet which has been dedicated to
cornbread since I bought and seasoned using <gasp> Crisco at least 15
years ago. I still melt a little of that partially-hydrogenized
stuff in the bottom of the very hot skillet from time to time to keep it
non-stick. I drain it off, of course.

I use soften butter in the actual cornbread batter.

I do not.

Also didn't wanna do the giant baggie method.

I saw the "paint stripper" method on U2B. It's a U2B video about how to
smooth out a new Lodge skillet (take note, jill). My Wagner already has
a dead-smooth bottom, but this video was quite educational.

......note the sander is air driven.

My Wagner skillet looks like the bottom was "blanchard ground".

I thought the video might interest you. So, don't take note.
