Default Toaster, $8.88

You probably know I need a few things to survive until our furnishing
gets here. Packed away is a really nice Kitchen
aid 4 slice toaster. Meantime, I'd like toast. So, I figured I'd get a
cheap one and later donate it.

WalMart has a toaster for $8.88/ Really? While not a complex machine.
it will has lots of parts, assembly, shipping from China. As much from
curiosity as need, I bought one.

We buy Pepperridge Farms Farmhouse bread, a larger slice than most.
Well, it doesn't fit! I had a good laugh and cut it in half to slice.
It actually did a good job of toasting, quickly and evenly. It will
fill a need for now.

I learned the hard way just what you learned. Not sure what brand my current
toaster is but it accommodates most all sizes of bread slice and even has an
extra thingie to the lever to lift the bread up higher if it sinks down too
far. It won't do full slices from a large round loaf though.

My only issue is that I have to keep fiddling with it. The bread was not
toasted enough for me. I turned the dial and then it was fine for a few
days, then it went to almost burned. I turned it down and now it's anemic
again.

That's a riot, missed a small detail, the bread needs to fit into
the slots. Not as if Pepperidge Farm bread is unusually large.

You know how you're supposed to unplug toasters and coffee makers
because their mechanism is a fire risk?

I'd unplug that one!

I set mine to cook right most times. Especially if using a
heavier bread, it might not toast enough. I just push it back
down for a minute then pop it up manually. I don't mess with the
setting.

Mine is an old (20 or so years) Black&Decker with 2 wide slots. I
do have to slice the larger oval rye bread in half to make it fit
but no biggie here. Paid about $12 back then and it still works
fine. It's not broke so I don't plan to 'fix it'.

If I ever do replace it, I'll buy one like Ed did...$8.88 bargain
one. Just a basic toaster is all I ever need.

I didn't know either was a fire risk but I always do unplug them
anyway. The only countertop appliance I keep plugged in is the
microwave oven. I also always keep my floortop fridge plugged in.

My toaster and coffee maker reside in an appliance garage and
I never unplug them. Knock wood nothing's happened.

Very old Sunbeam toasters have no lever to push down, the bread goes down by itself.

There's several things I look for in a cheap toaster. The slots should be wide enough for a sliced bagel. It should also be on the long side to accommodate non-standard slices of bread. The stroke of the handle should be longer to accommodate taller slices. The more turns of nichrome wire on the heaters, the more evenly the toaster will brown bread. There should be a button to stop the toasting and eject the toast. My target price is less than 20 bucks. A little more if it's got a nice design or has some visual appeal. A non-metal body is safer but I'll settle for metal if the design is cool.

Cheap is me toasting over a gas burner. Works wonders for a baked potato from the mw to blacken like camping in a fire.

I grew up with a kitchen with all gas appliances. The builders of the subdivision made it like it was a big deal and the most modern, wonderful, thing.. It was kind of an unpleasant environment to hang around in because it was so hot and humid. OTOH, I can't blacken peppers or roast marshmallows with my induction stove. I keep a propane torch in the kitchen. You'd think it would be more fun but not really.

LOL. I'm gonna try a piece of toast right now... held in tongs
over the gas burner.

<short time elapse>

OK... I'm eating it now with butter and orange marmalade.
It sure did cook much faster than the toaster. cool

I always have blackened green peppers and hot dogs this way. It
works well.

Agreed! The best toast I've ever had was when I was young and still
living with my parents. Toasting bread in front of hot coals in the open
fireplace was often a Sunday teatime treat.

It's cute in a nifty designer sort of way but for almost $200?
yeah, right. I'll stick with an $8.88 Walmart toaster, thank
you.

As I said though, I've got my B&D toaster that been doing it's
thing for maybe 25 years now. All I need to do is clean it up a
bit. Someone here even mentioned once cleaning out the crumb
tray. Hmmmmm, maybe I should consider that too?

I rarely use mine so keep it in a drawer with pots and pans. I don't
think it even cost $8.88, still works very well. I probably should
pay attention to the crumbs too, notice there are plenty gathering
underneath the toaster in the drawer

Have a nice Christmas, doubtless you have snow, we have high winds and
heavy (as in flooding type) rains, think I saw 75mm for us today.

It is a good idea to clean out the crumb tray. I was making some toast
the other day and it started smelling burnt way sooner that I would have
expected, so that reminded me to clean out the crumb tray. It had not
been done for a long time. It looks like I am set for another 3-4 years.

It's going to be a small affair this year. We usually do Christmas
dinner with our son, my brother and his wife, and their daughter and son
in law from California. They have a youngster now so brother and SiL are
going to California, much to my brother's chagrin. Now it is just my son
and his girlfriend. We did extend an invitation to my friend and his
wife who just got back from three weeks in NZ, but she has come down
with a really nasty flu.

I won the turkey fight this year. We are doing a prime rib dinner
instead. It's a 5.5 pounder so there will be lots of pan juices for
gravy and there will lots left over. Left over roast beef is infinitely
better than left over turkey.

The Christmas baked goods were running low so I made another batch of
brownies yesterday. I have given away most of my fruitcakes, so there
is now a bit more room in the freezer.

Dave, I love finding another "no turkey, eat roast beef instead" fan...don't forget the pan
juices are also perfect for Yorkshire Pudding. Yummmmm.

Have a great dinner. I have been invited to a local casino for their buffet on Christmas Eve,
but will be by myself on Christmas Day. That's fine with me...going to catch up on some
movies I have waiting.

Had the grown grandchildren and the small great grandchildren over today for
the pizza, cookies, and egg nog thing, it was great fun. I must say I
reminded myself of Sheldon with too much brandy in my egg nog. My 18 year
old twin grandsons kept asking me if I was OK and keeping a good eye on me.
Fa la la la. LOL
