No difference, aside from the accent of the person saying either word.

To me, one of them has straight sides to hold oil to do a
deeper fry.

To me being the operative phrase. Doesn't make it true.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting! If that is the difference, I have
several skillets)

Yes, but since nobody is precise in any words they use, if someone says
skillet, they may mean frying pan, or vice versa.

OK That is how things often work

I have both and have accidentally used them for their intended purpose

LOL I do it all the time, regardless of the fact I didn't know the
difference) We are just so clever ... ;p

I do now of course, but I doubt it will make a lot of difference

Very true, most times in actual use fry pans and skillets are used
interchangeably. For frying I use a skillet, fry pans cause too much
spatter... In fact for most frying I use a braiser. I only own one
fry pan, 9", I rarely use it, it's way too small, I can't remember
ever frying fewer than six eggs or two large burgers.

As S. I. Hayakawa teaches "The word is not the thing."

So, what's a wok? ....which is where I do my deep frying.
