Default Softening walnuts

I bought a large bag of shelled walnut halves and pieces for snacks. They
were too hard to chew with no teeth. I Googled and was instructed to soak
in water covered in fridge. They've been there for 24 hours and are still
too hard. Another other way of rescuing this $10 investment?

TIA
