Â* Pizza sauce ! I've got more than we can eat right away , and not
enough for another batch of quarts , so today I'll be simmering a pot of
pizza sauce . Mrs Snag (FYS) has problems with milk products , so I'll
make calzones - tomorrow , she has to work quite late tonight . We
already did one batch of quarts this week , it'll be about 4-6 days
before I'll have enough ready for another .

peel 'em, chop 'em, freeze 'em in 16 ounce portions in freezer bags.
Great for casseroles and addresses the problem of batch size.

Â* In the past I have just rinsed and frozen them whole with the skin on
.. Freeze on a cookie sheet then bag , you pull what you need . I just
run them under hot water and the skin comes right off , toss them in the
pot frozen . But the freezer is too full of meat to freeze many , and we
have jars aplenty so ...

you work with what you've got. End of season ? I like to make huge
batches of chili or spaghetti sauce and freeze. Unfortunately I still
end up putting a box of veggies up at the street corner with a sign

This time of year I like making pizza with sliced tomatoes on it. Nice
meaty ones, not a lot of liquid of course.

The Breakfast of Champions is 2 pieces of white toast, buttered to
make a fresh from the garden tomato sandwich. hmm-umm

Close. Better as a lunch than as a breakfast. I used to love them when I
was a kid. My parents always grew lots of tomatoes. I had digestive
issues with tomatoes for a long time. Now I am able to eat them again,
but I gave up on growing tomatoes. I can get them pretty fresh from
local produce stands, but not as fresh out of the garden as I grew up with.

I do that often too but fresh tomatoes do have too much water.
What I do the day before a pizza is to put a rack on a cookie
sheet and put the slices on it. Overnight (8 hours or so) in my
gas oven with pilot light will semi dry them but not dehyrate
them completely. It's a nice medium. Still plenty of moisture but
doesn't leak out onto the crust. Great for a pizza topping.

Also...that gas oven will make a perfect batch of yogurt
overnight too. I'm grandfathered in with the pilot light stove.
Probably won't ever find a new one. Or do they still make them?

Sorry but "The Breakfast of Champions" is a bowl of Wheaties. ;)
They already claimed that title a lifetime ago.
I loved it as a kid. Haven't had it in years.

Get this though - I just looked in my kitchen and right there on
the top of my kitchen cabinets is an unopened box of Wheaties
that I had forgotten about. Seriously forgotten about as the date
says "Better if Used by Oct2014." Good grief!

I wonder if that would still be ok to try? I might next time I
buy fresh milk. I don't see and ingredients that would go bad. Or
I might do a Julie and toss it. I could at least feed it to the
seagulls...they eat anything.

Also Janet US - your tomato breakfast is a winner. You can't ever
go wrong with a fresh from the garden tomato. Sadly, I can't grow
them right now but I do make the effort to go to a local stand
for them. I do miss having my own garden though. Not only the
good produce but the morning time spent pampering my garden. I
was out there at dawn every day and really loved those times.

Â* I'm usually out there by about 7 watering and checking stuff . One
benefit of being out early is that it's cooler and the bugs are moving
slower . Makes it easier to squash 'em .

that's too bad. Do you have an Internet neighborhood group that goes
something like 'Nextdoor Neighborhood?' My city is broken up into
segments of some of the largest subdivisions or locations such and so
north, such and so north for instance. My group always has someone
posting that they have too much basil or cucumbers, tomatoes,
whatever. That would be helpful for you if you did. Check it out.

I just checked the notation on one of my messages. It reads:'
Nextdoor
875 Stevenson Street, Suite 700
San Francisco, CA 94103
You could check if they have a Nextdoor in AZ or your city
It's nice. Neighbors alert you to suspicious people, lost dogs, car
break-ins, extra produce (usually give me a call it's free) or
furniture and appliances available to anyone who wants them. The
messages come through your email.

Yes, very helpful for recommendations too, like plumbers, roofers, mechanics
etc. If your neighbors recommend them, they usually are decent. I know we
appreciate a heads up when a house has been robbed a couple of blocks away
and so on. They also offer a lot of free things if anyone needs something,
including produce, lemons, promegranates, squash etc. That's the same
address as listed on ours.

Our local area has a community Facebook page where people sell or
give away stuff they don't need, or ask for stuff they do need.
