Strawberry icing - non-buttercream?

I've never liked using butter in icing.

How does one go about Googling such a recipe? Thank you.

Have you considered using one of the recipes for strawberry pie filling
? Might have to modify it a bit ...

I have no specific Google results. Maybe use cream cheese rather than
butter?

Use a butter recipe but use cream cheese instead. Perhaps add a little
cream to get it softer.

You can also us shortening, but, IMO, that makes it disgusting to eat.
Oh yummy, Crisco and sugar.

I don't think Leona was asking for a Krispy Kreme icing recipe. ;)

I think cream cheese would work as a butter substitute. And as other
suggested, actual cream.

I find the idea of a cream cheese strawberry icing intriguing.
Kind of like strawberry cheesecake.

Neither of us care for icing so if it's already iced we scrape it off.
We prefer a light dusting of powdered sugar or cocoa.

That's like people ordering pancakes as an excuse to consume a quart
of fake maple syrup. If a well baked cake I'd much prefer it topped
with good ice cream. I don't eat pie crust, only the filling if it's
good.

If they want to consume a quart of fake maple syrup it's their business,
not yours or mine.

If it's a good lard crust on that pie, I'll happily consume both. The
crust seems to cut some of the sweetness of the pie back.

Right? Give a whole new meaning to sharing a dessert. Someone can
have the cake portion, I'll take the frosting, assuming it's not the
Crisco type.

I can live without the icing. Icing is probably the reason I don't eat
much cake. I have a hard time making icing because it requires tasting
the stuff while you are making it and eating straight icing does weird
things to my guts. I do occasionally bake a cake, but my wife makes the
icing.

A little bit is OK if it is a good buttercream. If is is Crisco and
sugar, count me out. My favorite cake is a pound cake with no icing but
a really good crust.

I know that one very well - my family used it for years both for devil's food cake and angel food. Just not strawberry! Will investigate.

I've tried using the minus sign in Abebooks and it didn't work. Doesn't always work in Google, but will try again.

One of the few cakes I liked when I was a kid had that Crisco white
icing, It was a white cake with white. What was good about it was that
it had raspberry jam between the two layers and it was covered in
coconut flakes.

Sorry. I usually scrape off my icing and give it to Mr. Sprat.
(Ok, we're the opposite of Jack and the Mrs., but still...)

If it's Crisco and sugar, I scrape it off. If it's something good
like cream cheese I'll eat it.

When we split a wedge of cake in a restaurant, he gets the top and I
get the bottom.

Icing sugar with strawberry ice cream sauce stirred in does the job for me.

Search for Italian Meringue, and figure out how to add a strawberry syrup
or mashed strawberries cooked down with sugar until thickened.

Cindy, and Tert, it is easy to find Strawberry and also Mixed Berry Cream Cheese...either Philadelphia
brand or the store's own brand. It is really tasty. I use it mixed with marshmallow fluff as a fruit dip.
