It's broken alright:
"Tomato Puree (Water, Tomato Paste), Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup,
Wheat Flour, Salt, Vegetable Oil (Corn, Cottonseed, Canola and/or
Soybean), Flavoring, Ascorbic Acid, and Citric Acid."

You make a tomato soup using tomatoes and all kinds of crap and it
still doesn't taste good. You still have to add... wait for it...
"flavoring". That could be anything, deepfried cockroach turds, for
instance.

To make it cheaper (for them, not you). ;)

I think so. Tastes awful. Most likely cost cutting.

Progresso's Hearty Tomato Soup I think is far better than
Campbell's... I think all Progresso's soups are much better than
Campbell's. As a canned soup Progresso is as close to homemade as it
gets, and better than from many home cooks.

How many home cooks' tomato soups have you eaten?

I actually dislike Progresso soups a lot, just nasty IMO.

fry a little flour in your favorite oil or butter
for a few moments. add a small can of tomato paste,
some garlic powder and onion powder and if you want
more salt you can add that too and then whatever
liquids you want to make it a soup.

this is much less expensive than Campbells and
you can do what you want with it.

The OP doesn't mention *which* Campbell's soup. Not tomato, not chicken
noodle, not... anything. Just a general statement "this soup has
changed". A complaint about nothing specific other than a brand.

Canned soups have been going downhill for decades. If you want good
soup, you gotta learn to make it yourself. Of course the OP won't.

We usually have a can on hand because it is a quick and easy meal if you
are not up to cooking.

That said, making soup is not difficult at all. It does take some time
though as it has to cook for some time. We use an 8 quart pot. I made
chicken vegetable a couple of weeks ago. My 8 quarts had more chicken
meat than Campbells puts in a 55 gallon drum.

Maybe you should pay attention to the topic-line in this case...

Agreed.

That sounds like a good scratch recipe. I also like to put
chopped fresh garden tomatoes into tomato soup and a bit of real
onions. I don't like pureed/mushy soup of any kind.

Ps- basil goes well in that soup too.

The Subject line answers your query... I always consider the Subject
line.

Often someone wants just one serving and quick... canned soups fill
the bill. I make a lot of my own soups that I freeze but sometimes I
want something different which is why I keep a selection of canned
Progresso soups Usually during winter Canned soups go on sale,
Progresso at $1 per can any flavor is a good buy. I also like
Progresso because it's not condensed, just pour into a bowl and nuke
it. With Campbells some flavors I eat straight from the can, no added
water, no heating... vegtable beef is good that way.

I was looking around for some canned tomatoes and came across a couple of cans of Campbell's soup. One had a picture of a Star Wars character and the other had a picture of the characters from the animated movie "Cars." I don't know what kind of soup they were since it wasn't evident on the label. The cans had pull top lids - that's a pretty good improvement. All cans should have that.

Andy Warhol had it right. The important part of Campbell's soup isn't what's inside, it's what's on the outside of the can.

I think that canned soups are the reason I was never much of a soup
eater. Working on the road and eating a lot of restaurants meals exposed
me to soups and I learned that they can actually be good.
