Was it you who mentioned during an OT discussion that you have an AT&T
Answerphone like I have? The one with the digital female voice that *tries* to announce who is calling and often flubs it? I was reading yesterday. It sounded to me like the caller was "Mayonnaise Tofu". Struck me as pretty funny. Jill |

I do have a Caller ID that tells the caller that we don't accept anonymous calls. and a message that we record on the answering machine, but that's it. Cheri |

It is very handy at times but can certainly mess up some names. Even with caller ID, you cannot always see the phone so hearing it helps. |

Hearing it just tells me I don't have to stop what I'm doing to know if I want to pick up the phone. I rarely do when "Mayonnaise Tofu" is calling. Of course it turned out to be something else on the display but still not any reason for me to answer the phone. Jill |

Except if the message is flashing when I get back, that would mean that I have to listen to them, I do not want to do that, much easier for the caller ID to stop them. I get a ton of telemarketers. Our phones have the option for talking caller ID but I turned it off because it was too funny to hear the Chinglish announcements. My wife has a friend who calls frequently and the caller ID shows Douglas John but the talking CID has a strong accent and says Doogras CHON. |

I get a ton of telemarketers. They seem go in cycles. I am on the national Do Not Call registry but every once in a while I start to get a bunch of telemarketers, invariable with anglicized names and Indian accents. If I have time I have a little fun with them and try to keep them on the line as possible so that they won't be hassling other people. The calls come for a couple weeks and then they stop. Maybe someone else is complaining enough that they get shut down. Then there are the survey calls. Pollsters are exempted from the DNC rules. You have to wonder about the randomness of their calls when selected at random 3-4 times in one week. |

I get a lot of them for solar, carpet cleaning, surveys etc. There is one that has a 209 area code, same as mine, but when I looked it up it was coming from Tennessee. They call at least once every day and have for two or so months, changing some numbers around and sometimes they will giggle for a few seconds. Dunno why. Cheri Cheri |

Sometimes I ignore the phone even it when it's someone I want to talk with. If I'm in the middle of doing laundry, sorry, got to wait. Or maybe I'm cooking something which requires my attention. Leave a message, I'll get back with you in a few minutes. I don't drop everything the minute the phone rings. I leave that for the "gotta-be-constantly-connected" cell-phone generation. I do like the announce feature on the Answerphone. It's often comical in the pronunciations. Jill |

And you don't return messages. Why > have one? Ringer stays off as most calls are worthless. Most sales calls won't leave a message so that eliminates all that nonsense. Personal messages get returned. I didn't say I don't return messages. People that know me know to leave a message. Anytime I go into that bedroom, I look at the machine. If it's blinking, I'll listen. I also still have dialup internet access. Still fine for usenet and best for more secure connections like checking my bank account, etc. For most anything else, I have wifi here now but it's public not secure. It's free neighborhood wifi. Range isn't far but I can get it from either bedroom...not farther into the house like where my desktop is set up. It's all good and it works well for me. |

On mine, I have to press play to listen or delete. I don't have to listen to a whole message though. As soon as each message starts, pressing delete will immediately work...don't have to listen to it all. I do have to start each one though. Also, my machine detects and doesn't keep calls where no one left a message. But you have caller id so that works well too unless someone you know is calling from a different phone. |
