We ran out by Friday after the storm on Wed but I wasn't going to the store madness Wed afternoon on my way home. Not sure I can get out tomorrow yet. I'm 4 miles from the nearest plowed road best we can tell. Don't worry, plenty of frozen and canned veggies here. May not be our favorites but all is well. |

I've got lots of frozen veggies. :) I was able to get to the store on Saturday to buy milk & eggs. (Remind me to restock shelf-stable milk one of these days.) Some of the roads were still a bit icy. We don't have things like sand or salt trucks this far south. I would imagine they're a tad scarce near Virginia Beach, too. Jill |

Some sand and salt mix but mostly sand here in Virginia Beach. Most all secondary roads and all neighborhood roads are still solid ice as of this morning. It got down to 9F here this morning and that's actual temp, not windchill. My road outside of house is about 2" of solid ice right now but that will be ending pronto. It's gone from 9F to now 27F and temps are quickly rising. In about an hour, it will be above freezing and will stay that way for the next 7 days, even at night. All of this nonsense will be gone in a few days. I'm planning for a grocery trip either Wednesday or Thursday morning. No hurry though...I can wait for the meltdown. |

Straight salt is put on the roads only at the beginning of storm and acts to form what they call a brine sandwich which stops the snow from sticking and being compressed into an icy layer that plows will just ride over. > > My road outside of house is about 2" of solid ice right now but > that will be ending pronto. I don't want to disappoint you, but I have dealt with this stuff all my life. When the ice starts to melt it will likely melt first on the surface, so there will be a thin layer of water on top of the ice and that is going to make it even more slippery than it already is. If you have any drains, make sure they are clear. Otherwise, there is likely to be flooding. FWIW. He had had -22 C (-8F) and colder at night for the last two weeks, not much warmer during the day. My well froze up on New Years Day and again yesterday. Today it is up to 32F and we had about 3" of snow.... wet, heavy snow. Thank goodness I have a good snow blower. |

I gave up on road salt and ordered 50lbs from Amazon. I was still snowed in today bit we got some good melt-off this afternoon and i'll be at work tomorrow (was today but teleworking from home). Here's some of the handy stuff I stock. Not just for storms but for the 'I wanna cook and I'm out of xyz'. I find dehydrated milk works well in most baking things (bread for the most part). It's not perfect but it works pretty well. Dehydrated buttermilk works well too but don't bother with the cardboard container type or move it to a sealing glass jar as soon as you open it if that's all you can find. I've also found dehydrated large onion flakes, celery flakes, and bell pepper flakes work reasonably well in a pinch with a lot of things in the soup/stew catagory, for flavoring if not looks. I love acorn squash! They also seem to keep forever in the crisper so we normally have one about. We ate it for Christmas though and hadn't been shopping since. Try coring and peeling an apple then adding that with butter and choice of seasonings/honey. I also added small bits of stewed dehydrated dates this year. Festive looking! I'm certain I've seen pictures of ones you have posted right? They always look good. Tonight was pot-roasted marinaded steak (odd name, it was a pot roast and my husband insisted making it like steak) with frozen - steamed brussells sprouts, fresh (mostly) mushrooms with onion slivers and butter and garlic. Rice at the side. So, eating out of the freezer ain't all bad here. Carol |

Snow varied by area here and for some wind channel reason, my part of VB always gets 2 inches more (snow and heavy rains). So, we got a solid 13 inches here, now packed to 6 of solid ice on the neighborhood roads. Schools still closed tomorrow due to those side streets like mine (and I'm 300 yards at most from a middle school). For the rest, it snowed Wed and has been pretty much in the teens or lower with a rare day of a balmy 24F until today. The news is full of it only going down to 32F tonight! Yeah! We hit near 60F by Friday. |
