Diet Pepsi with aspartame returning to shelves in US

01:22 / 01:22

NEW YORK (AP) -- Diet Pepsi made with aspartame is returning to shelves
in the U.S., after PepsiCo saw sales plummet following its reformulation
of the drink last summer to remove the artificial sweetener.

PepsiCo says it will offer "Diet Pepsi Classic Sweetener Blend" made
with aspartame starting in September, in 12-ounce cans, 2-liter bottles
and 20-ounce bottles. The move is intended to appease fans who don't
like the taste of the reformulated drink, which is made with the
artificial sweetener sucralose.

But PepsiCo Inc. said Diet Pepsi made with sucralose, commonly known by
the brand name Splenda, will remain its primary diet soda offering.
Those cans will be silver, while the "classic" Diet Pepsi with aspartame
will be come in light blue packaging.

When PepsiCo removed aspartame from Diet Pepsi in August, it said the
change was the No. 1 request by customers. Industry executives have
blamed the declining sale of diet sodas on concerns people have about
the ingredient. Several years ago, Coca-Cola Co. tested ads in select
newspapers defending the safety of the sweetener.

PepsiCo's replacement of the sweetener from Diet Pepsi tested the theory
that it was to blame for fleeing customers, but the plan seems to have
backfired.

In the first quarter of this year, sales volume for Diet Pepsi sank 10.6
percent, according to industry tracker Beverage Digest.

Diet Coke, which stuck with aspartame, saw volume decline a more
moderate 5.7 percent.

Aspartame had been linked to cancer in lab mice, but it is approved for
use and the Food and Drug Administration says more than 100 studies
support its safety. PepsiCo's decision to bring back Diet Pepsi with
aspartame was first reported by the publication Beverage Digest.

Meanwhile, PepsiCo also said Monday that Pepsi MAX will be re-introduced
as Pepsi Zero Sugar in the U.S. and will still contain aspartame.

Shares of PepsiCo Inc. slipped 13 cents to $101.85 amid a broad market
sell-off. Its shares are up more than 7 percent over the past year.

Diet Coke has been offering a Splenda version for some time. I don't like
it. I also don't like Diet Pepsi no matter what is in it. Tastes bad to me.

None of the artificial sweeteners work for me. I'm down to about four
sodas a year so not a big deal, but anything with the artificial
sweetener gives me a queasy stomach. Not sure why, may even just be in
my head.

Cold water is still the best and it pairs with any food.

I don't usually drink Diet Pepsi but my co-worker did and
she said when they changed it to be Aspartame free it was
awful. It was so bad she would no longer drink it; I tried
it and does have an awful aftertaste. She'll be glad to
know they are bringing the old version back.

The only diet pop that is not wretched is Dr. Pepper. The regular
Dr.Pepper is so disgustingly sweet that I cannot handle it. I rarely
drink pop, maybe one a month. That might change a bit this week because
I was in a grocery store yesterday to get some butter and they had
ginger beer. I broke down and bought four bottles. I drank one when I
got home. That is one soft drink that does not have to be served cold.

That's for sure. Whenever I eat out I always order water;
tea and colas are ridiculously expensive in restaurants. At
home I'll drink a diet cola, usually, with my meals. But when
I mow the yard I do like to drink a regular Coke. Something
about that sugar and caffeine spurs me on to finish those
last five rows of grass.

Water is always my drink of choice at home with or without meals.
Nature's champagne. I'll sip on diet soda at work but not at home.

Agreed. Nothing better or more refreshing than a nice glass of ice
water. The only soda I ever drink (very rarely) would be ginger ale.

While mowing I brinbg plain water, my tractor has AC so I don't need
to drink a lot, but when push mowing, clearing brush, etc. I wait
until I'm finished and then nothing is better than a couple three ice
cold brewskies. I don't drink much soda but I do enjoy seltza, I like
those with natural flavor, no sugar no fake sweetener.

Well, I have to slog along behind a push mower, granted it
is a self propelled, but I still have to tramp behind it.

A few years ago a neighbor brought me a Margarita to drink.
Oh boy, was it tasty but soon my legs felt like lead. I
vowed not to indulge again until AFTER I was through mowing.

Shut up!

Seriously though, what does that electric lawn mower
do for your electric bill?

Is your electricity delivered by your local power company
solar derived?

I totally agree. I have very little use for any soda drinks.

At the end of the day I treat myself to a naturally flavored seltza,
usually with a wedge of lime or lemon and a good glug of Crystal
Palace... sometimes a drib of maraschino cherry juice.

I've started to experience what I've found out is over hydrating before
physical activity. For me these days physical activity is pretty much
anything due to my back problems and not getting enough of it. Over
hydrating can cause you to become nauseous because the water in your
stomach sits there while blood races from there to other parts of your
body to try to cool you off. I get all of the symptoms from nausea to
shaking and confusion. I'm glad I found out what the cause of this is
because it's pretty scary. I drink a lot of water and tend to run
dehydrated, probably due to so many medications but I guess in this case
there is a reason to not drink as much before physical activity and just
make up for it after.

Yep! This is why the dance studio only provides tiny cups. They take a break
halfway through class for water. If they are still thirsty after they finish
that cup, they can go get another. That gives them enough of a break to let
the water settle.

I caused myself bad trouble last summer by running far too alkaline. I was
drinking water with lemon, lime or other fruits in it but I did not realize
that the water I bought was actually alkaline. I assumed it just had
electrolytes in it. Nope.

Apparently most Americans tend to be too acid. Not me and not my daughter.
Most likely because the bulk of our diet is vegetables. She actually eats
fruit almost daily as well. We've been tested several times and we're always
slightly alkaline.
