And oildie and a goodie and more people fall for it than you can imagine.
Another scam resurrected from the dead is the IRS agent. You will get a
call from a very terse individual identifying themselves as an IRS agent,
badge mumber whatever and they are investigating you for criminal fraud.
But first .... to verify we have the right party, please provide us with
your date of birth, SSN and address.

There have been worse cases where they target immigrants and scare them
into sending them money, often very large sums. Unfortunately, the victims
often come from regimes where there is a real fear of the police, so they
pay up.

Republican governance in action. Whenever repugs say they want to save
money, run for the hills.

Kilpatrick, a Democrat, quit office in 2008 in a different scandal that
was extraordinary at the time but seems smaller compared with the
sweeping federal probe that has led to the convictions of more than 30
people. Sexually explicit text messages revealed that Kilpatrick had
lied during a trial to cover up an affair with his top aide, Christine
Beatty, and to hide the reasons for demoting or firing police officers
who suspected wrongdoing at city hall.
