Yes of course.

How depends on the power of your microwave.

I've been using one for years, and it works great; four hard-boiled eggs
in about 11 minutes in my microwave.

In a bowl of water, or in a bowl of air?

Per the website listed above - just scroll down farther to see the
following description, as quoted below:

" . . To use, simply place whole eggs into the little
grooves of the interior perforated shelf (piercing
not required), then screw on the top and cook. No
more hot water and delicate maneuvering to keep
the delicate goods intact! The plastic boiler is
high-heat tolerant and goes conveniently into the
dishwasher."

HTH. Whether or not this particular product is good or not, that's
something I'd not know never having used it. Nor have I ever used a MW
to nuke eggs, period. So, YMMV :)

The bottom half is filled with water. An aluminum shelf holds the eggs
up out of the water. The top half is lined with aluminum, keeping the
microwaves from reaching the eggs. The water in the bottom boils, and
the steam comes up through small holes in the shelf; it's the heat of
the steam that cooks the eggs.

Eleven minutes in a microwave? It takes five in a pan of water.

The bottoms of the baskets of our electric steamer have little
depressions that you can set eggs in to steam-cook them.

(Ours is a slightly different model but the principle is the same.)

I've tried it once or twice. it seems to take forever.

I was not. And that realization prompted me to do the following
experiment.

I took four eggs (total weight 263 grams) and a color-changing egg
timer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yzr7VAeEvA) out of the fridge.
Put them in a small pan with 564 grams of water to cover. Set over
high heat on the smallest (Turkish coffee-pot) burner and started the
stopwatch (00:00:00). At 09:24:31 one egg popped. At 10:08:59 we had
boilage so I turned off the heat. At 17:40:75 the timer had turned
completely yellow with no trace of pink left. Shelled the popped egg
to check and see that it was completely hard-boiled.

So I have to admit that 11 minutes in a microwave is pretty good time.

You appear to be one of the lucky ones. There are literally dozens of
reviews on Amazon documenting exploding eggs and big messes to clean up.
One reviewer said the explosion actually dented the inside of his microwave
oven. Might not happen to evrybody, but it seems it happens to enough
people not to be worth the risk.

Years before personal computers (much less the Internet shopping for
microwave egg boilers) my father tried boiling an egg in the microwave.
It was purely an experiment on his part. Circa 1973. It definitely
exploded. I don't see much reason for trying to boil eggs in a
microwave oven. Scrambled eggs are another subject. LOL

That is why you need 564 grams. If you only put 562 grams of water, all
hell would break loose inside the MW. You have to wonder, just how did
they come up with such an exact number. 564 grams = 19.07 fluid ounces

Not a dorm room, but I dont have a stove. I'm a bachelor and I only
cook real simple stuff from a package or warm something out of a can.
Most of the time I just eat sandwiches. I only have a microwave, and
dont plan to buy a stove. The house I last lived in, had one, and one of
my pets turned the burner on, which started a stack of paper plates and
a plastic bowl on fire that were sitting on the stove. Luckily I was
home and put out the fire. This could have burned the house down. I
hardly ever used the stove anyhow, so after the pet incident, I just
shut the gas off to the stove, and never used it again. I'll never allow
any open flame device in my house again. If I cant cook it in the MW,
I'll live without it.

This thread did confirm that boiling eggs wont work using a MW. Before
I buy some special gadget, I'll just buy the preboiled eggs they sell at
the convenience store. They cost more, but this was just a one time urge
to eat some boiled eggs for easter. I just bought some of the preboiled
ones, and ate them.

I suppose I could boil them on my outdoor charcoal grill though, if I
really wanted to.

If you'd upgraded your stove, you wouldn't have had that problem and
the easy fix for no open flame is electricity.

There are lots of BBQ groups on Facebook you can join. Some of them
are interesting, but you need to pick and choose based on your

Get a grip, kid. I've seen guys who wouldn't touch a stove because
it's a girl thing. Really, you can do this. You *should* do this.

>This thread did confirm that boiling eggs wont work using a MW.

Not really. If you just have to do this, (a) use microwave to boil
water, (maybe 2 minutes) (b) add eggs, (c) bring to second boil (maybe
1 minute). Remove from microwave, let sit for ten minutes.
Hardboiled eggs! For good luck, now run cold water over them for a
couple more minutes.

In fact it may be even easier, just add cold water and eggs to bowl,
microwave for three minutes, let rest for ten, then cool.

*

What doesn't work is putting a raw egg on a plate and putting it in
the microwave without the water.

And that even in the microwave (with water) the overall time is still
over ten minutes.

Yeah, that's the other half of the guy thing, they can't handle a
stove flame, but piles of flaming wood and smoking charcoal are fine.
I mean, seriously?

Weighed on a scale. (We use metric here.) 564 grams was where the
water came to just over the eggs.

You can't write a recipe instruction like that though. 564 grams may
cover your eggs, but not mine. Eggs vary. Proper is to state, water to
cover the eggs.

It wasn't intended to be a recipe. It was an experiment to see how
much time it would take for a known weight of eggs and volume of water
to come to a boil over a known heat source and produce hard-boiled
eggs. (I know I should have measured the initial temperature of the
water but I didn't have a thermometer handy. Hence the addition of
"cold tap water" in my follow-up post.)

I was somewhat surprised by the results. Based on them, I would have
to go for the microwave method if I had to hardboil a lot of eggs. But
I don't. And I also don't have a microwave. So for me it's back to
"Put eggs from refrigerator in pan just large enough to hold them all.
Add enough cold tapwater to cover the eggs. Do not cover the pan. Over
medium-low heat slowly bring just to a boil. Turn off heat and cover
the pan. Wait five minutes. Drain and douse eggs with cold water.
YMMV."

why not use the Bove trick and just buy pre-cooked hard-boiled eggs

but I suppose you could just heat up a bowl of water to boiling, put the
eggs in for X minutes and then proceed as normal

Cold eggs into hot water is probably going to undercook them, most
everyone heats the eggs with the water and then lets it sit.

I'm going to try to nuke a couple next time around per my formula:
boil water, add eggs, maybe wait a minute, nuke another minute, then
let sit for ten, then rinse cold.
