Default OT, sort of: Opening store produce bags

How do you open one of those plastic produce bags in the food market
without wetting your fingertips in your mouth? I hate to do this - fingers
get dirty in stores.

I'm just an old worrywart?

TIA

Well you certainly own up to one of the more disgusting habits!

If you insist on wetting your fingers, a lot of the produce is sprayed
regularly with water.

Well, yes. But you might try touching the produce first.
It's often damp enough to transfer just enough to your
fingers to open the bag.

Shop on a hot day and attack those bags with sweaty palms. Gee, usually I can part them with some rubbing of fingers.

I started a new habit - when I get out of the car, I toss a bottle of gel cleaner on my car seat - so no way can I plunk down in the car without grabbing the bottle and taking a shot of the stuff. I also wash my hands the second I enter the house, esp. before putting food away.

So, you don't wash your produce before you eat it?

Rub it between your fingers & thumb or rub between both hands.
Personally, if it doesn't open using thumb and fingers, I resort to
wetting them.

Normal people wash their produce when they get it home... who knows
how many filthy Austin tex mex ass wipe fingers touched it since it
was harvested in the field, dwarf?

Normal people wet their fingers on the piece of produce they are
buying, or they wait 10 seconds for the spritzers to spray their
fingers. With lots of produce sold by weight like leaf lettuce I make
sure to shake off the extra water, the clinging water can weigh more
than the lettuce. I always place the bags of produce in my cart open
end down so that they can drain while I continue shopping, and then
give them a good shake at the check out before they're weighed. The
markets are cheating shoppers by charging them like $1.89/lb for
clinging water.

I can't see what good wetting your fingertips would do? I would never do
that for any reason! I just shake the bag a bit and work it back and forth
between my fingers. If you really want wet fingers for whatever reason,
then wet them using the wet produce!

I am constantly trying to open the wrong end. In many cases the correct end

Sure, and contaminate the wet produce with what washes off your filthy hands...yuck. Then someone else picks up that wet produce and takes it home.
All produce should be well washed before storage and also before usage.

One thing I like about this relatively new chain, Sprouts, is that
the bags open quite easily. They are folded in threes on their roll.

That stuff doesn't feel clean to me. I'd rather have the alcohol
based wipes to use on my cart and consequently my hands.

Didn't know palms work better than fingers. More area I suppose. I'll try
it today when I get my usual bunch of babanas. (Bananas are dry so
there's no handy water on them, loose potatoes, loose onions, and other
produce I usually buy.)

Jesus H. Khrist...did you not learn in elementary school already that GERMS
cause disease and that your filthy hands are covered with them?
Licking your fingers in a grocery store after they have touched those grocery store cart HANDLES is really, really unwise. Better to spit on your fingers (if you have to), than lick them...aaaargh!

LOL

I'm mostly a produce-toucher, transfering loose droplets probably
transfers little from fingers to produce.

Otherwise you can always spit on your fingers rather than licking
them, I've done that more than once. See, I told you produce-touching
wasn't so bad!

ok, but really, that gel is made to really clean and eliminate germs.
If you don't trust it, I don't know why.

There must be a reason but I can't find it

Grocery store this am. I had to deal with a bag. Often I will just

I usually have produce in the other hand, so only one is available to
open the bag.

Did you know that the germ killing ability of those gels lasts only
two minutes?

LOL my friend. Almost 62 years old and never a problem with that
nonsense.

ME: Walk into grocery store and get a cart. Grab the sanitary wipes.
Wipe my hands and the handle of the cart. Shop with no worries about
baby germs here and there. Lick my fingers (sometimes) to open a
supposedly sanitary plastic bag off a roll.

Eventually leave store, put bags in car, wipe my hands again on the
sanitary wipes that I saved.

Then I come home, clean out the ferret cage with all the poopy papers
on the bottom, forget to wash my hands and eat a tuna sandwich. No
poopy virus so far.

You worry too much.

Back to his question.... what is the problem? If he is touching the bag
he is taking for his produce he is only contaminating himself with his
own germs.

Did you know that washing your hands under running water does a better
job than any sanitizers?

Yep, I only use hand sanitizers as a last resort such as if there is no water available and I have just touched some icky thing. I have never used the sanitizers in the supermarket either. I just wash my hands when I get home.. I haven't been sick in many years. I do wash my hands frequently when out and about.

I love sanitizers. I think they are a great idea to solve any hygienic
issue while you are not at home.

Anyway, of course washing hands under running water is a lot better.
Since I use contact lenses I need my hands to be always clean. Not
just for this, but an example.

How is that going to help me with a grocery store cart handle?

I beg to differ. He is touching the bags he is using. If he passes germs
to the bag he is taking is is merely passing his own germs to himself.
No sane person could get bent out of shape over that.

Replying to my own post to backtrack somewhat on my comment. I do use spray sanitizer at the gym.
There are signs all over saying to spray down the equipment after use, but not many people do. I've gotten into the habit of spraying them down before I use them.

But usually there is nowhere to wash when shopping... I appreciate
that the market in town provides sanitizing towelettes at the
entrance... I think it a good idea to wipe down the cart handle.
