Around here the dollar stores are Dollar General and Family Dollar. FD
is close to my house. Both have everything a regular grocery store does
when it comes to household items and yes, they cost much less. And yes,
name brands.

I don't buy things like gift wrap or gift bags or aluminium trays. (?)
Trying to recreate a TV dinner? <EBG>

Cleaning supplies: An example: I just bought toilet bowl cleaner, two
bottles of Lysol brand for $2. The exact same thing at the grocery
store is $2.59 for one bottle.

Things like dried pasta (ever heard of Barilla?) are also cheaper at FD.
A certain poster we all know would appreciate the huge selection of
name brand canned beans, cheap! LOL

I buy milk and eggs at FD, too. The last time I checked (three days
ago) a gallon of milk at Publix was almost $1.50 more a gallon than at
FD. Hmmm. Publix is a pretty big chain in the Southern states and they
even have their own branded milk, yet it costs more. And no, the milk
isn't on the brink of expiring. Neither are the dozen eggs I bought.
FD even sells things like half & half, butter and cream cheese at very
competitive prices. Also not on the verge of expiring.

I see no reason to waste gas when I can pick up things like that for
less money much closer to home. No need to drive to WalMart in Beaufort
to save money.

I guess it depends on where you live and what dollar stores you have.
The only Dollar Tree I ever saw was in Memphis and it looked like a junk
shop. Kids toys and cluttered aisles and all sorts of crap I'd never
buy. That's not the way things are around here.

Okay, Jill. How about the Walmart website itself? You're not the brightest
bulb are ya?

http://www.walmart.com/search/?query=grass%20fed%20beef

Granted, they don't seem to list the specific beef that I bought but they
don't list everything on the website.

And this is their new organic brand. The stuff is selling like hotcakes
here. I went back for more pretzels but they were sold out. Oh yes, the
pretzels are corn and barley free. I know that you care about such things.

They do tend to carry specific things all of the time but... At least in
this area, there is no consistency from store to store. Some sell
refrigerated and frozen foods. Some don't. Some have the shelf stable milk
but the one by me doesn't. And the good thing about them is that you'll
never pay more than $1 for anything in there.

We don't have Family Dollar here. We did have it on Staten Island but I
don't recall ever buying any beans there. Olives? Yes. I think I could
get beans cheaper elsewhere. I did tend to buy certain, specific things
there. One year I bought a lot of glassware when we did etched gifts for
Christmas. I also liked their socks and plasticware. I don't recall buying
any paper goods or cleaning supplies there though.

I've never seen fresh vegetables at any of the dollar stores. Very few
frozen vegetables, either. I do shop for frozen vegetables at the
grocery store. I go to local farm stands to buy fresh vegetables and
buy what is in season.

None of the dollar stores here have fresh stuff. And Dollar Tree is pretty
much all that we have left. The few other places that called themselves a
dollar store, eventually went to a party store.

Oh goody! While you're buying cases of that oh so healthy soda do pick
up some of those "organic" pretzels to chow down on.

BTW, that's *not* a WalMart brand. They're expanding their market by
selling their products at WalMart. It's a company out of Scottsdale,

I don't have to prove anything to you. I have had produce from WalMart
go bad too many times to ever shop for it there again. Their
distribution center is undoubtedly far from where we are and they have a
need to gas the produce.

I buy other things there on occasion. I buy my gasoline there all the
time with WalMart's Mastercard. I save 5 cents a gallon. Their
Murphy's gasoline is fine.

And toothpaste with not so wonderful ingredients.

I'm not saying it's a problem in all dollar stores. It's certainly
happened, after all the stores don't buy from the usual sources,
like directly from the distributor.

Dollar Tree is great for things like glassware and kitchen storage
items. Most of my large wine glasses are from Dollar Tree as are my

I don't buy my soda at Walmart nor do I buy it buy the case. It isn't sold
that way here.

I may be splitting hairs here but according to them, Walmart is the only
place to buy them. The Neighborhood Market is owned by Walmart and that is
where I've been shopping.

http://wildoats.com/products/where-to-buy/

So in my book that makes them a Walmart brand!

We have one here called "Everything 99 Cents", though not everything is
really 99 cents :-)

They do sell a small selection of fresh produce, though it's rarely very
fresh. I have scored good prices on packaged romain lettuce and green
peppers on occasion, however.

Expanding their marketing on the west coast makes them a Walmart brand?
Hardly. Would you call it a Target brand if they sold it there?

I haven't seen any fresh produce at the local dollar stores, Janet. I
wouldn't shop for fresh produce even if they did offer it. I can go to
one of the local farm stands and pick up fresh in season vegetables.
For things not in season, I'd drive to the grocery store. :)

Then I stand corrected. I thought that was the neighborhood market owned by
Walmart. At any rate, the only place to buy them in this area at this point
in time is Walmart. And I only brought that brand up to begin with to point
out to you that Walmart does carry organic food now.

Family Dollar is not the same as the real dollar store where nothing
is priced more than a dollar. They are a discount type store though.
We have on in town and I've been in it twice. Mostly cheap stuff in
there. They sure make Wal Mart and K Mart look classy by comparison.

Counterfeit products are a gazillion dollar industry and I'm
sure places selling stuff for very cheap are not going to be
squeaky clean in that department, more than stores that buy their
stuff directly through manufacturer channels.

We had a local chain that tried to compete w/ Walmart. Alco built in
the smaller towns Walmart had passed over. Even though they were
about 10% more expensive, across the board, they were also closer and
carried things WW didn't. Like bed/box sets. Sadly, they didn't make
it and the entire chain went bust. The fire sale is raging right this
minute. :(

That was the chain that got me to take a closer look at dollar stores.
While everyone else was charging $5-$15 for the then fairly new 100W
CFL's, DT had 'em for $1 ea. I recall one DT also had a cold case and
sold stuff like lunch meats, milk, and other chilled items.

The Walmarts here sell USDA Choice beef, nothing added... but I don't
like how it's cut plus the roasts are too small and there is no

All stupidmarkets sell branded meats... there's really no way to know
where butchered meat comes from unless you buy from the farmer.

Probably because nobody ate them but you.

Not where I live... I've never seen a Walmart circular/newpaper
insert, not in any language, no TV ads either. The closest I've seen
to Walmart advertising is their web site. Even when I go to the
Walmart store there is no circular at the front door like at other
stores. They do have price tags on their merchandise but I don't call
that advertising. The Club stores don't advertise either, unless
you're a member and then their promotional item book arrives in your
snailmail box, I get snailmail from BJs, which is a Walmart company.
Walmart does have stores worldwide, maybe you see advertising because
Walmart considers Texas part of Mexico.

The town where I live has a Dollar General, opened about five years
ago... I walked in once, all over priced dreck, most items cost over
one dollar. There is also a 99¢ store on the other side of town, been
there some 30 years, privately owned, not part of a chain and
everything in the store costs 99¢... also a lot of poorly made
merchandise but I do buy my big desk calendar there and they sell the
same brand blocks of bird suet that elsewhere costs $1.50 so I stock
up for the winter. It's right next to the package liqour store so
sometimes I stop in to kill a few minutes but I rarely buy anything,
but a few weeks ago I bought a small picture frame to hold a 5 x 3
photo and four more blocks of bird suet. They don't sell any fresh or
frozen food, just a lot of canned/bottled items and candy. It's a
good place to buy wrapping paper and all sorts of holiday decorations.

you really have to watch Wally World carefully when you're purchasing
your protein supplements Sheldon...

They may try to slip you some fox rather than the preferred donkey
meat!
