Counting change
The girl at the coffee shop had trouble making change today. It get the
same thing almost every time I am there, a coffee and one of their great muffins. It comes to $3.57, and since we don't have pennies here anymore it is rounded down to $3.55 She is relatively new there, but has been working there for at least 3 weeks. She must have had a brain fart today. She could not figure out the change. She tried to do it in her head but resorted to a calculator. |

I had planned on waking up early and going to Steak 'n Shake, but woke up late, and had to resort to McD's. I ordered 2 steak burritos, but what ended up in the bag was 1 steak and 1 sausage burrito. The manager is going to tighten me up in the morning. Especially the boys should check out Debbie Harry lip-synching Heart of Glass. Super sexy, and kinda heart melty. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGU_4-5RaxU --Bryan |

I typically will not use cash but this morning I paid for some coffee and bentos in cash because I happen to have a whole bunch with me and for some reason, thought it would be faster. It came out to $9.03. Unfortunately, I only had 2 pennies with me so he gave me 97 cents plus some bills. For some reason, the guy hands me the bills and then drops the 98 cents on the bills which immediately caused the coins to slide off the bills like water off a duck. That's a total rookie mistake but I look forward to seeing the guy get better day by day. Unfortunately the coffee, (Sam Choy's Volcano Blend) was watered down all to hell so it'll be a long time before I go there again. That's the 7-11 business for you: a lot of people go there in the morning to get coffee. They won't go back for weak coffee. I sure won't. |

I think I have said that in the US, I favor dropping all coins but the quarter, since in 1913, the smallest coin, the penny was worth 24 present day cents. I would agree to rounding of a price to the *nearest* quarter. Even better would be dropping the whole set of present day coins and replacing by a twenty and a fifty cent coin but parking meters in a lot of places need quarters unless they can be fed by a cell phone. -- Jim Silverton (Potomac, MD) Extraneous "not." in Reply To. |

I think the best compromise approach would be my first suggestion to drop all coins but the quarter. It might also be a good idea to keep an eye on http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm When the worth of a 1913 penny exceeds about 50 present day cents we could drop the stupid things. I still have some silver dollars that we received in change during a cross country trip thro' Nevada in 1965.
