Agh - company dropping in tom'w at 1pm. What can I toss together incase they have eaten?++
Just got the call - they plan to stay 2 hours tops. But I will be out of the house tom'w all of the am and wonder what I can pick up for a quickie offering.
HELP. What's your quickie go-to? |

A container of spring mix salad greens, a sweet yellow or orange pepper,
and a grocery store roasted chicken, for a nice chicken salad. A simple vinaigrette, a nice riesling, viognier, or gruner veltliner, and a store-bought dessert (key lime pie, cheesecake, eclairs) should do it. Throw it all together in fifteen minutes. -- Larry |

Anyone calls last minute planning to visit a minimum of 2 hours I give them directions to a local restaurant and they can buy me dinner. I have people stopping in on short notice for a quick visit, usually neighbors, but they're happy with a cuppa cawfee... most times they could be walking their dog and we'll visit in the driveway, they don't want anything but to chat and if the weather is warm to let their dog frolic in my creek. I can't imagine people passing through expecting me to feed them... actually I don't want to meet those schnorrers at a restaurant or anywhere else, they just want to make a pit stop on their way to somewhere else for a free meal and mess up my bathroom. I don't entertain the kind of people you described, I don't want to know those parasites. |

You're in burrito/enchilada country, so be proud. -- Avoid cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold them. |

I laid out:
cut up pineapple (ouch - they are up to 4.99 again) seedless red grapes my old standby shrimp dip and crackers. libations: Rum n coke, white wine, Coors light, ginger ale or black cherry seltzer. They weren't really hungry and stayed 3 hours. Glad I didn't plan on a real sit down meal. |

I love the Cupcake Sauv Blanc, so I bought a different white and it's way too sweet so it's a future sangria wine because I couldn't return it. Turns out alcohol (even unopened) is one of two things the grocery store will not take back - I think she said baby food is the other. -- Avoid cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold them. |

I'll bring some pita bread, hummus, tortilla chips, and black bean and corn salsa. I'll make a wine run if supplies get low. Tara |

They have entertained us a lot more, so I felt I couldn't say no. It was stupid of me to panic, but that's just how I am. I was trying to spot clean, get the bathroom in shape, pass a dustrag ....it wouldn't have been so bad, 'cept I had another commitment in the morning and knew I had to go to the market and hope to find a pineapple. I am the type who goes to pieces if the house isn't perfecto, which usually takes me 3 days, not counting the cooking I may plan to do. I have been known to go into hiding rather than face no-notice drop-ins. |

Housework perfectionista syndrome. Well, hps might make guests feel a leetle bit anxious about squashing the cushions, making fingerprints on surfaces, every step disrupting the direction of the carpet pile etc . Try thinking that a perfect hostess who has hps, really should let things slide a bit when guests are coming, so they can relax :-) Janet UK |

I have one friend who literally leaves the house vacuuming because she likes to open the door and see vacuum tracks. Another always seems to be using an extractor on her carpets every time I drop by (unannounced). I'm serious. Both their houses are spotless and live up to the old adage: you could eat off the floor. -- Avoid cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold them. |

That's after the lunching hour. Serve them some tea(not the meal, the beverage) and have a bowl of nuts in the shell on the table. Chances are they won't want to bother shelling the nuts so you don't actually have to feed them anything, but you had something on offer at least. In between meals a beverage is all you are really entitled to expect when you go out visiting. |
