Batter bread with no egg or milk!

This recipe does call for butter as desired on the top but none in the
bread. And it can be baked in a casserole. So... Yay! I am already
envisioning the variations. But it does call for bread flour and I don't
have that. I know that King Arthur sells it online but can you get it in a
grocery store? Thanks!

Call your local Safeway and see if it's on the shelf. Mine has
stocked it for a year or two. I'm still waiting for them to stock
White Lily, but I guess we don't have enough Southerners around here
for that to happen. :)

I don't know of any grocery stores that don't stock bread flour. It may
not be King Arthur brand, but they all have it. Even Target.

I'm talking specifically about King Arthur brand, not bread flour in
general.

As usual, he lied. Seems he's not very busy since he got his award
for "volunteerism". They were probably happy to slam that door shut
and nailed it closed as soon as he left the building.

Oh, I did see a Coinstar the other day. It's next to the gambling
machines on an L part of a wall that protrudes and you don't see
what's on it unless you turn your head and look specifically at that
area as you pass by. I conceded a long time ago that a coinstar could
be there, but I don't gamble and I don't look at that area. He has
some serious mental issues. Glad I don't have to deal with that BS in
person. People like him are best taken at the opposite end of the
interweb.

Thanks! I haven't been doing a lot of baking so buy very little flour.
Just tossed out the rest of the whole wheat pastry flour,. Wasn't able to
use it up in time. There were only perhaps 2 cups left. I made blonde
brownies with it but they weren't liked. :(

Pretty sure no store here stocks that brand. I had just never seen bread
flour but then I have never looked for it and don't go down the baking aisle
often.

You're pretty sure that they don't carry it but you don't know because
you never looked for it and you never go down the baking aisle. I guess
that means that our collective attitude about you being pretty much a

It's there with the national and store brands bleached and unbleached
flour. http://oi62.tinypic.com/2vtb4t3.jpg

Okay. I will look for it in a few weeks. Need to use up the bread and
dough that I already have. I made bread for a good many years but always
just used regular flour. Never bread flour. Made pasta with regular flour
too.

For krists sake just use ANY all-purpose flour and get with it...it doesn't have to be one special brand.

Don't know how you could have flour if you never go down the baking aisle.

Ahem. The recipe does not call for all purpose. It calls for bread flour.
If you don't know the difference, then perhaps you don't belong in this

I've made bread with all purpose (name brand, generic/store brand) and
bread flour (name/no name). Same - same to me, but if you backed me
into a corner and told me to pick which one I liked better - I'd say
All-Purpose. JMO and YMMV.

My grandmother managed to bake bread without buying special flour to do
it. Come to think of it, so did I. Batter breads in particular don't
require King Arthur or any sort of extra soft flour. Just sayin'. :)

King Arthur bread flour tends to be a little higher in gluten than
most other brands of bread flour. That would make it a less soft
flour. A softer flour would be pastry flour. Your point is valid.
Any brand bread flour will do. Gold Medal Better for Bread is
generally available and considered a good choice.

I tried to reply to sf and then something didn't work. So I'll reply here.
Bread flour is not a soft flour but it is a little harder due to the
addition of gluten.
