Nope. Waiting at the post office is a well known thing. As is the "going
postal" thing. Postal workers have long been overworked, not enough staff,
etc. Things have gotten somewhat better but it's still not a good
situation.

The Mill Creek post office is particularly bad. I had been warned of it
even before I went there. Not only do they serve Mill Creek but Bothell as
well. Bothell does apparently have a post office but they are not full
service. And Bothell isn't a small city. So if we need to pick up a
package, we have to go there. And for some reason, a lot of people also go
there for things they probably could do at one of the mail stores. So there
is always a line clear out the door no matter the day of the week or hour of
the day.

I've gotten the duct calls and I have no ducts!

They'd do more than jam, they'd cause permanent damage... paper clips
often damage shredders. Any of yoose with shredders know you're
supposed to lubricate the cutters, makes a big difference in how much
better they cut... drizzle a little 3in1 oil on a sheet of paper and
pass it through the shredder... every 500 sheets or every 6 months.

A nickle's worth of guilt doesn't nearly cover my time for opening
that mail. The junk mail I despise are those jumbo envelopes from
auto dealers that contain a worthless metal key... I open them to
remove the key before shredding, and they print your name and address
several times on each page.

Most of us consider burglars and muggers to be doing a thankless job
too. Having no other job prospects does not make the telephone
solicitor's job any less intrusive.

We get calls, and they hang up when you answer (the number keeps
changing). They will call at 2:00am, 5:00am, I think they are robo calls
and I wish they would stop.

There's an abundance of good paying jobs, problem is people,
especially young people, are deathly ascared of perspiration, dirty
hands, and calluses. Today everyone wants to drive a desk and start
off collecting a CEO's salary or they'd rather be bums. There are
dozens of occupations (that will never go obsolete) that go begging
because it's less work to be on the dole. Anyone willing to wield a
paint brush can earn a very good living, can earn even more if one is
willing to learn wall papering too. I have a good friend who dropped
out or high school and has been painting and papering all his life,
and still at age 70, for a long while he's had his own business and
mostly all he does is bid on jobs, he became quite wealthy. We began
together painting stoops in Brooklyn when school was out during
summer, he decided to make painting his career. What's not easy today
is finding a good house painter. The electrician who wired my barn
has his 17 year old son as his helper, that kid will always have a job
and will make excellent money. I can list at least 20 different
skilled trades that are nearly impossible to fill today because young
people are ascared of work. I know another person I grew up with
who's a glass cutter, and he doesn't do window panes, he does fancy
custom table tops, mirrors, and such with intricate configurations,
another skilled trade with a huge demand not being filled. Do you
know that a good air conditioning/refrigeration mechanic earns more
than a dentist, I know because the dental hygienist who cleans my
teeth is married to one, they live very well, she doesn't need to work
only she enjoys working and she likes her job... she gets to talk,
talk, talk and no one can disagree with her. lol

sf has a duct you can drive a Mack truck through... she gets her duct
serviced at the Bronx Zoo, by the veterinary gyn who does the
elephants.

After reading the post about putting the envelope in the shredder
unopened, that's probably the intent. To open it.

I have known postal workers too. They are retired now. I'm sure they would
like to see that expression gone. However, it did happen! And although the
post office has made changes, I can't see as much change there as I can with
the DMV.

I don't know about your state, but when I was younger, the DMV was probably
the last place you'd ever want to go. The buildings had very institutional
looks to them. Not nearly enough staff, all overworked and all with a bad
attitude problem which they took out on *you*! The state made lots of
changes to make things better. Much friendlier looking surroundings, more
help. They even stopped doing the driving tests there. I think the written
tests can still be taken there via computer but they can be taken other
places as well.

Since they made these changes, I've not encountered a gruff person there at
all. I can't say the same for the social security office. Although most
people there were nice I did manage to cross the path of one woman on a bad
day. Wasn't pretty. She was much nicer the next time I went in. Seems the
person I spoke to over the phone sent me entirely the wrong documents which
I took the time to fill out. She became angry at me because I brought in
the wrong thing.

That's true. However, they made the choice to take that job. I don't care
how desperate I am. There is no way I would ever take a job going door to
door selling or telemarketing. I think those jobs are just wrong in this
day and age. I do realize in the past, door to door was a much needed
thing. For certain things. It isn't now. Door to door people and
telemarketers annoy people. Plain and simple.

Oh mon dieu! I actually agree with you on something! I think these sorts
of people are akin to drug dealers. The drug dealer will justify what they
are doing, saying they could get no other job. And this could be true. But
it doesn't make it right.

I have no experience with shredders. I only have shredding scissors but now
with most things being paperless, that's really all I need.

But when I worked at K Mart, we had a huge, crappy copy machine. The danged
thing broke down at least once a week and we'd have to wait for the
repairman to come. About every other time, he would find a paperclip
somewhere in the bowels of the beast, bunging things up.

Oh yes! I haven't gotten those in a while. But I used to get them.

And this is OT but used to be, every time I took my Windstar in for repairs,
I'd get a phone call soon after from the dealer's used car department,
wanting to buy it. Which of course wasn't an option and I told the lady
this once. Said if I sold it, I would have nothing to drive. Her reply
was, "But don't you WANT a new car?" To which I replied, "Of course I do!
But I have no money!" She then went on to cheerily mention that they had
financing. And I replied, "Yes, but I have no money with which to make a
payment!" She hung up.

That's simply not true Sheldon. I doubt that it's true for any part of the
country and it's certainly not true here. This is why my husband had to
move back to NY just so we could put food on the table.

I know several people in the heating/airconditiong field. One works for a
roofing company now. When times get tough, heating and air conditioning are
not things people get repaired. I know of one family who made it through a
whole winter staying mostly in one room with thick blankets at the doorways
and making due with a space heater as they couldn't afford to have the
furnace repaired.

Doesn't mean you have to read it. Keep the money and put the letter

I never read anything like that. Most of my mail goes strait in the blue
bin. If there is money, I take it out first.

Actually I do that every time I empty it, but it's a large Fellowes so it
holds quite a bit. I took what James said to be a joke, that's why I
laughed, the only thing that isn't paper that I put through mine are CD's,
and Credit Cards, in a special slot, certainly wouldn't put coins through
it.

I wasn't being very serious but I have actually had a shredder jam
because of one of those coins. My Fellowes shredder stops very quickly
when it feels overworked and can be reversed but it can deal with the
odd paper clip.

I've never had the Microsoft call, but a co-worker has. We're in IT and
he screws with them when they call because they are clearly clueless
about what they're calling about.

I can't even remember the last time I had to go to the DMV in person. I
guess only when I've had to have my license renewed. We have little
satellite DMV offices and they're generally very fast to get through.

Surprise! It's a government building. They don't look like grand
hotels. The DMV for the area where I live isn't pretty, but pretty
isn't the point.

The only reason I've had to go to the DMV in recent years was when I
moved here from a different state. I had to register my car, thus had
to officially change my driver's license from TN to SC. No long lines,
no big deal. The woman I dealt with was very nice. She even tried to
get a good DL photo. As if there is such a thing. LOL

We don't even have to go in every time to get a new license. They'll use
the same pic and you just renew online. But every other time, you have to
go get a new pic, eye test, etc.

I can renew over the internet, but I have to go in once every ten
years for a new picture. Luckily, we can make appointments now so the
process goes a lot faster. What surprised me was how fast my new
driver's license came in the mail... less than a week. Really!

I think ours might be instant now. But I could be wrong on that.

competent callers

I kept one on the phone for a very long time. Long enough to call my bro
who doesn't technically work for Microsoft but has done some things for them
in the past. The guy stayed on the phone even after I told him I had
reported him (and I did) to whoever it was that my bro said to report him
to.

Oh gross. I figure the phone is here primarily for MY convenience.
Like you, if someone wants to speak to me, they'd better start speaking
into my machine. I do pick up when expecting a call from a doctor or
someone else, but that's pretty much it.

When I was first married, I sold window awnings through telemarketing, and
actually sold some the first day I worked at it. I made 28.00 which wasn't
bad money in the 60's. However, I hated it and that was the only day I did
it. LOL
