Default Weather Might Get Bad After All

I joke about "white food", ice and snow this far south. It's been
raining since late afternoon. Now sleeting.

I got an email saying check your HVAC unit and make sure the condensor
and fan isn't coated with ice. So I donned a coat and shoes and took my
battery powered Coleman-style lantern out to look. Sure enough, it's
coated with ice. The heat is now set to "Emergency Heat" so the fan
doesn't freeze up during the night.

This is the first time I have ever encountered icy weather this far
south. (I've lived in this area twice in my life.)

OB Food: Leftover oxtail soup.

Weather is just wacked all over. I'm sitting here with a thermal shirt on,
but wearing no coat when I go out and no heat on in the house. It's not
warm but it's not super cold either. But next week it's supposed to dip
down to below freezing at night.

I learned when I was a kid to always keep crackers and peanut butter in the
house. Now I have to keep sunseed butter as Angela can't have peanuts. If
we do lose power and get snowed in, we won't starve.

Default Weather Might Get Bad After All

Here in western South Carolina we got our annual snow yesterday afternoon and evening, this time it turned out to be just one inch, but because we don't use rock salt and we have few snow trucks and plows, all the schools and many businesses are closed today as the roads have turned to ice. I'm working, as I live a mile from work and I walk to work and have winter gear, but a lot of my co-workers will be taking the day off.

Yesterday they said the Club would be closed. This morning they sent
email saying it will be open for lunch with a "limited menu". (I've no
idea what that means.) They'll evaluate whether to open for dinner this
afternoon.

Gary might think it's "baby" winter weather but my driveway is a solid
sheet of ice. It's sleeting like mad. I feel sorry for the Club
employees. They have to drive all the way out here to prepare and serve
a "limited" lunch. That means driving on icy roads and over multiple
bridges and overpasses which, of course, will be frozen. Meanwhile, the
administrative offices are closed so the executroids get the day off.

Well, it is "baby" winter weather compared to what we've been having.
Of course, the inconvenience to you is full-sized.

We've broken our record for snow in January (31.5 inches so far)
and it was colder here than at the North Pole on Monday. Naturally,
there are places that have been (and usually are) colder and/or snowier.

An 8-inch snowfall here means, "I get to work late because I had
to snow-blow the driveway." Ice and sleet are typically not a big
problem, because we salt our roads. (And because the land is
pretty flat; no mountainsides to slide off of.)

<Bill Clinton > I feel your pain. </Bill Clinton>

Last Tuesday night we got 4" of snow and I stayed home on Wednesday.
We went to work on Thursday but if I had known how icy and scary the
roads were, I would have stayed home that day too. I can drive safely
enough but it's the other driving idiots that scare me. High speed and
tailgating on icy roads. Jackasses!

This Tuesday night (last night), we got 8-9" inches of snow and
nothing will melt today (high of 27 or so). I will *NOT* do that long
drive tomorrow morning. It's just an accident waiting to happen.

That's the thing. It just doesn't *do* this down here. There are no
snow plows. No salt trucks. Not even sand trucks, which is what they
used to use in Memphis. No, sand doesn't melt snow or ice but allegedly
provides some traction. I think the last time it actually snowed here
was around 1989. I found a picture Mom took. That was, at most, two
inches. It was gone the next day. This will be, too, unless something
changes. But we aren't used to or equipped for it.

Believe me, I know. I've driven in snowy conditions in Memphis more
than once. It's the other idiots you have to watch out for. I remember
once they finally closed the office at 1:00. A normal 30 minute drive
took me five hours. Had to go over an overpass at one point. Everyone
was being careful. Too careful. Just as a car would reach the crest
the driver would hit the brakes. Uh oh! Then the car started sliding
backwards, spinning, down the slope and careening into other cars.
Idiot! You were doing just fine, why did you hit the brakes?!

As I said, I feel sorry for the cooks and servers. You know they don't
live here. Hell, I'm only a mile away from the Club and I'm not driving
in this crap.

Doesn't look like much, does it? That's not snow. It's accumulated
sleet. Now imagine the roads...

We didn't get any snow. We got falling rain/sleet that froze into ice
after hitting any cold surface. Here in the city I believe most
schools and offices are open. Rural areas are just plain shut down.

Take a look at Barrow, Alaska. It's about the closest the US gets to
the north pole. It's a cam that shows the latest view looking towards
the Arctic Ocean.

PS - I talked to one guy living there a couple of years ago. We
compared our morning temps one winter morning and our morning temps
were over 100F different. wow! I was having an extra warm day
(like about 60F) and he was having an extra cold day (like -40F)

Freezing rain and sleet is nasty stuff, especially since no one here is
used to it. I'm pretty sure the schools are closed. I don't know about
offices, other than at the Club. Heheh. The administrative offices are
closed. Those people get the day off. The cooks and servers have to
make the drive (this is a rural area) to serve a "limited lunch". I
feel for them. If the roads are anything like my driveway... yikes!

We (42 N) are at approximately the latitude of Italy (43 N).
Being in the middle of a continent makes all the difference.

Jill, is that your house? Holy cow, it looks like way overkill for you
to be living there alone. What's the sq. footage of that one? It looks
large! My apartment is 1000 - 1100 sq. feet. It's a nice size but
really more than I really need now that my daughter is married and
gone from here.

You might have gotten it free with the inheritance but I'll bet the
monthly bills and the upkeep, and the annual food requirement is
pretty darn expensive. :-o

ROFL! No. That's the view from my back yard across the 11th green of

We are on the same latitude as Moscow

I've been watching the Weather Channel and there are people reporting
6 hour commutes. There are places where school buses were shut down
and kids stayed overnight at school. Home Depot opened its doors to
folks who couldn't get home to let them stay overnight where it was
warm.

That's at least twice as much house as one person needs, actually
that's enough house for a family of four, five, or even six.

That kind of gift is much more a liability/curse than an asset
(actually it's no asset at all), and from reading Jill's daily posts
it's obvious she derives absolutely no enjoyment whatsoever from
living there... always complaints, never even once anything positive.
Jill would be way ahead if she abandoned that house, took her
inheritance and rented a small furnished room, don't need more if all
one does is live vicariously through reading books.

With time on their hands and all that material, they could build some pretty
good bunk beds, forts, etc. Would be better to stay overnight in a
supermarket with some cooking facilities, though.

That is NOT my house. Those are condos on the other side of the golf
course. That was a picture of the condos across the way.

Sheldon, you've seen photos of my house. You complained about them, as
I recall. Saying they looked like something a "realtor" would take.
Sorry, I'm not a professional photographer. Even if I was you'd find
some reason to bitch about them.

I'm already in for it! No, that is not my house. Those are
condominiums on the other side of the golf green.

Oh, and by the way, I think your house is too large for two people. All
that land, the barn, the used to be rented out guest house. You're
lucky you're still able to take care of all that property.

Watching the news on TV now. Atlanta is pretty well shut down as the
highways are clogged with abandoned vehicles. If you only get this
stuff once a year it is cheaper to shut down for a day or two.

Don't look for too much sympathy from me. It has been hovering around
0F around her for the last week and for the last few days it has been windy.

My Home Depot has a hot dog stand in the vestibule. We call 'em
"cadaver dogs". Probably not enough dogs for very many people.

mine sells tri tip, in addition to whatever. I just inhale the tri tip as I
walk by.

I take care of it just fine, and I can well afford to pay for whatever
needs doing... I've never complained about the costs. I don't know
why you live in a place that you constantly complaine about how much
it costs... you can just leave... you have nothing invested.
