Your survey didn't offer much choices. I've never tried steak tartare
but if I did, I certainly wouldn't use ground beast or horse meat. I
would mince a nice ribeye for that.

Did you perhaps miss the MCINL (My Choice Is Not Listed) options? I'll
have my ribeye whole (as in not ground/minced) and seared on the braai
(BBQ), thankyouverymuch!

I happen to enjoy steak tartare - beef version (minus the raw egg yolk);
FWIW, I'm too 'skeered' of horses to ride them, let alone eat their flesh
- and I've heard said flesh is really tough even when ground/minced so I
guess I'm not missing much...

I reread that survey and still don't understand what made you think
her version of tartare was cheap hamburger complete with pink slime.

The very first question on her survey:
"Have you ever eaten 'steak tartare'
(ground beef or horse meat versions)?"

Read her survey again.

I tried it in a reputable restaurant over 35 years ago, and with some misgivings then. ( Younger and more foolish and was probably showing off to my dinner companions). Today, I wouldn't trust any of 'em, and I mean the restaurants AND the steak tartare offering. I haven't noticed it on a menu in ages, so maybe the matter is almost academic now. Not a beef lover to begin with, so seafood or chicken would win out over s. t.

Would you have been okay if she'd called it minced meat?

Where I came from the meat was typically ground round, ground
especially for the purpose. You didn't go to the meat case and pick
up a package of meat.

Wow! I've lurked here for quite awhile, but have never seen a post
about the rfc web site. Just poked around it a bit and will be spending
some quality time there. Just have to rip myself away from here. (-:

I have not seen it on a menu for a long time, either. Carpaccio (sp),
the thinly sliced raw beef is probably more available, though not all
the rage it used to be. Once and a while I've had carpaccio on a cruise
ship.

Have to blame this survey on re-runs of 'Mr Bean' we've had on TV here
lately - they showed the episode where he took himself to a 'fancy'
restaurant for his birthday and ordered the steak tartare - because it was
the cheapest item on the menu with the word 'steak' in it... <g>

The series must be at least 20 years old (if not more), but it still makes
me laugh. Another episode about his attempts at cooking a turkey for
Christmas was also pretty funny.... but I think it is/was one of those
'love it or hate it' shows.

If you had to chop up a bunch of beavers for a beaver stew, a beaver
cleaver would come in handy.

The past couple of weeks, we've been watching seasons one and two of Get Smart.

Like the Andy Griffith episode when they go to a schmanzy French resto in Raleigh and Andy has already cued Opie beforehand to just "order a small steak". Guber is treating and Aunt Bea orders the lobster. Turns out the friend Gube is trying to impress is a fraud and not at all well-heeled.

No problem, Leslie (think you said that's your name IRL?)

The RFC site has been going in various incarnations since the late 90s and
was originally created by a lady named Carol (a.k.a. Damsel in Dis Dress)
and has been maintained by a few others since then. I took over
maintaining it around 2006/2007 - can't remember exactly when <g>

Thing is, one has to rely on the subscribers of r.f.c to supply content,
which gets sent to the current webmaster when the mood takes them - so
some of said content is a bit 'long in the tooth'... But yes, there is
some good stuff there for interested foodies. Enjoy!

BTW, I've only recently started posting to the group again - sometimes I
just take a break <g>

Well, thanks for my introduction to Mr. Bean. Never had heard of him. I can't believe -- 17 million viewings?

I loved it when he washed the lettuce in the drinking fountain! Thanks

Like I said, the show and/or that type of humor is not everyone's 'cup of
tea' - in fact my husband thinks 'Mr Bean' a load of rubbish - but I don't
hold it against him ;-)

Besides, Rowan Atkinson is a British actor - so doesn't surprise me if
some folks in the USA (or Canada) have never heard of him...

fish; O.M.G!

There are a bunch more of those Mr Bean 'skits' on youtube, so knock

I do love watching the occasional reruns of 'Are You Being Served', a
British TV series. What a crazy store. Mr. Peacock, the snooty
floor manager, and the woman with the ridiculous purple wig. LOL

Eating raw meat is a stupid thing to do unless you are a carnivore.

Why is it stupid for an omnivore and not stupid for a carnivore?

Carnivores can't read.

Incidentally, I wonder if Roy was including sushi in his raw meat
prohibition...

One of the first usenet groups I started to follow was
alt.support.stop.smoking, aka AS3 (that group has moved from usenet to:
http://as3-web.org/ ). Several years after I quit smoking I took over
the group's virtual cookbook. I know very well how a site's content
depends on submissions. The cookbook will sit idle for many months then
for reasons unknown to me it will pick up again and go gang busters for
awhile. The recipes are mostly family favorites.

For anyone interested the virtual cookbook is he
http://as3-web.org/as3cookbook/ (Just noticed the nav bar on the left
is not working. I'll be checking that out very soon !!)

We *all* need a break now & then! (-:

Sushi with raw fish would not be my favorite...I don't like
worms OR poisonous food. My cave people always cooked their
food after they discovered how to make and use fire.
