I don't see any rails, or lips on the shelves. Did you angle the shelves
backward slightly, or are you going to mount the rack with a slight
backward tilt so that the jars can't walk off the shelves due to
vibration, etc.?

Why not sloping shelves or guards or lips on your spice rack to ensure
the jars stay in position?

A very slight tilt, but the wall where it's going is slightly uneven in the
correct direction. Unless the New Madrid Fault has a major slippage, the spices should be fine.

It's very likely you are better than me. I build stuff for utility, like
this bed frame--

They do slope a tiny bit, and this was made for a specific location, on a
plaster wall that isn't perfectly vertical. The house is 88 years old.

The bed frame in the guest room where were sleeping this winter is made
from 2x4s. We've shut off our upstairs rooms because it costs a lot to heat
them as cold as it's been.

Good question. I also noticed that on the bottom shelf is a jar of
cinnamon sugar. That's a waste of money vs making it yourself.

I was truly surprised to realize that they sell cinnamon sugar in
stores, and that people buy it. Mix cinnamon and sugar. If it is too
sugary and not enough cinnamon add more cinnamon. If it is too pungent
and not sweet enough, add more sugar. Seems to me a couple years ago
there was actually a thread here about how to make it.

Yes, and I'm the one who started that thread. :) Reason being, I hadn't
had toast with cinnamon sugar since I was a child. Mom always bought
cinnamon sugar. I never did. One day I got a rare sweets craving and I
wanted cinnamon toast. I had a jar of ground cinnamon from Penzey's. I
had sugar. I blended the two until it tasted right. Cinnamon toast was
just as tasty as I rememebered. :) I sealed the mixture in a container
and stashed it away. I've had cinnamon toast a couple of times since
that post. It's not something I want often. It was much better than
the stuff Mom used to buy at the store.

Looks nice/cutsy. But kind of small, no room for additional spices.
And it really needs a door, light deteriorates spices. I'd have made
it twice that size, and twice that depth. Make another one and attach
it in front with hinges, and make a door.

I might put a curtain on it. A future project--planned for the last 2+
years--is to sew curtains for the kitchen. The fabric I have is similar
to this- http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/...ng80/94462.jpg

I know it'll be more complicated than the shower curtain I made a few years
ago-- http://www.flickr.com/photos/1552229...7639292360523/

I'm decent enough with the sewing machine once I get the darn thing threaded.

They look kinda tightly packed. How easy is it to pluck or refile an item?

Would a big truck rumbling by shake em out of the rack?

I guess I'll stick with mine rolling around in a couple of drawers.

The reason I made it was that my wife suggested that she'd like a spice rack,
so I just found some wood, and a few hours later, I had made one. We have drawer space *issues*.
