Thank you, and I agree. We offered to come down early on Thanksgiving Day to help - she's about a 2 or 2-1/2 hour drive away from us - and she said not to because she'd have everything prepared the night before and all that was left was to put it in the oven. Unfortunately, because of work, we couldn't come down the night before. Her mother lived to be just shy of 97 years old, so I'm hoping we have her around for many more years to come. -S- |

My father was a handyman who could do just about anything. Having grown up on a farm and training as an aircraft mechanic in the war, before remustering to air crew, he learned to fix just about anything with anything. He was not much of a cook. I did not inherit a lot of his mechanical skills, but my mother's father was a great cook and my brothers and I all seemed to have inherited that ability. We can all cook. When my wife was working I cooked almost all the meals. I even did most of the cooking after she retired. She took over all the cooking duties after I had heavy duty surgery. I have to confess that I sort of enjoyed her cooking for me. She was starting to get pretty good at it so I did not want to discourage it. It is only over the last couple months that I started taking over in the kitchen. Three weeks ago she sprained her ankle really badly and I am back to doing it all. .....reminds me.... I have to go put the chicken legs into the oven. |

There are people out there that can do jobs a lot better and a lot faster, so why not hire them and have it done right the first time? We have spent tens of thousands undoing the MESS in this house created by some guy who thought he was a handyman. He loved making little rooms out of big rooms. Hubby has done handyman things. When we were younger, he and a couple of buddies built a house for spec and did a lot of the work themselves. Fast forward a few years... he installed the bamboo floor when we remodeled the downstairs. It wasn't super easy, because it was a large area split into a living room and U shaped kitchen/bar (with peninsula) + dining area separated by a fireplace.... quite a bit of real estate, lots of corners and it had a contrasting boarder set in from the wall. Took him at least three times longer than it would have if we'd hired someone, but he did a really good job. A few years later, we hired someone to put in the kitchen floor upstairs (easier job - no boarder), because he had learned from experience that he'd rather pay someone to do it. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

I can barely operate a screwdriver and feel no shame. Instead I can play damn near any musical instrument, chat with anybody about anything and get laughs in almost any setting. I'm a pretty good photographer, film maker, writer, poet, actor, bon vivant and raconteur. Certainly being entertaining doesn't get the respect, or the shekles, that plumbers and carpenters do. I can live with that. Oh--and I can diagram sentences too! |
