1 in 6 Americans gets food stamps?
This is the figure they just quoted on the news. They said even though the
economy is getting better we now have more people on food stamps than ever! But AFAIK I only one of one person personally who gets them and she doesn't get much. It's my friend's adult daughter who is unable to work because of her mental problems. She did work briefly for a law office some years ago so gets a small amount of disability for that. And a small amount on her EBT. Who are all these other people? |

That's rather what I suspected, it isn't 1 in 6 adults that gets food stamps, it's 1 in 6 of total population where one adult food stamp recipient translates into several beneficiaries. I presume this includes both the fabled welfare queens with a dozen "income generators" as well as the religious loons who similarly have dozens of "income generators". I recall the retarded (literally genetically from inbreeding) FLDS folks in those obscure border towns are on the food stamp rolls. |

The ones referenced and in the news for their "dear leader's" child rape conviction, were in some obscure TX/NM border town as well as some UT/?? border town where the entire towns pretty much consisted of cult members. The bit about the in-breeding related mental retardation was documented as well by public health officials. Recall this is the FLDS cult, not the LDS (still a cult, but apparently no more child rape and direct in-breeding). |

I've known of a few low income families that got them and deserved them. I've also known many who don't deserve them and do anyway. I used to work with one. He just lied to them about his income to qualify for FS and unemployment. He told them what his monthly bills were but he didn't mention that he had 2 roommates paying their share. He also didn't even try to get a new job after we layed him off, just to run out all the free benefits. He learned to live on less plus he secretly worked any time someone would agree to pay him in cash for awhile. And he knew of several people that got the EBT card and bought groceries for others then sold to them at a discount. Sadly, whenever there is anything free offered, there will always be people in line to take advantage of the offers. Seems that the state(s) are so overwhelmed that no one ever checks on these recipients. It would be a mistake to eliminate these social programs though. All that would hurt is the people that really need them. G. |

That's how one vast strata of big political thinkers consider unions corrupt, "mainstream" media as liberal and Jewish, Muslims as terrorist, liberal Christians are secretly either atheists or Muslims, and the list of horseshit just goes on from there. Most of my opinions based on nothing much, posit people as generally good, generally honest. I'd hate to have to live in the world of some people's opinions. Yeah, people gravitate to free quite rapidly. I don't think they gravitate to lying and fraud in order to get federal subsidies though, as they are too busy trying to stay alive. It seems that wherever humans are in dire need there others eager to call them freeloaders and thieves. Oh what the heck--I'll suspect it's "almost half"! :-) |

All that > would hurt is the people that really need them. I did work with a woman who perhaps abused the system. I say perhaps because although she was working full time and her husband also worked although always under the table stuff, he had a lot of issues. Perhaps drug and alcohol abuse but not sure. He did abuse her and he also took all of her money. So although she was making it, it was never there for her or her kids and had she not gotten the food stamps, they likely wouldn't have eaten. Or not much anyway.... Somehow she got low income housing as well. That was odd because after she left him she was no longer eligible for it. I don't really know all of the particulars of the situation so can't comment too much. But I do know that people like that do exist. We had neighbors who did similar things. Don't know if they used food stamps but... They sure could pull the wool over people's eyes and took advantage of anything and everything! I was glad when they moved because I got tired of telling them "no". They had no computer so the guy was always calling me and asking me to Mapquest things for him and print them off. And the woman wanted me to babysit all the time. The bad part was that their one girl was Angela's friend so she couldn't understand when I kept saying "no". But it didn't take her long to figure out that her friend was taking advantage her too! I think those people were the type that would move into a rental and stay there, paying nothing until they got kicked out. And somehow they would move on and do it again. They also like to boast about how religious they were. |

The biggest reasons are the economy is not as good as you think and also that over the course of the last 10 years they have consolidated a great many social programs into the food stamp mprogram. There used to be a lot of food assistance programs that were not part of SNAP. So the numbers are misleading because the one program is now counting people that used to be in other programs. |

Well, they're unlikely to survive without it, what with the relentless corporate takeover of agriculture. Subsidies are bad for world markets though, some other form of assistance would be preferable but not likely to happen any time soon. |

For example, 76% of the land in Wales is devoted to livestock farming, mostly to produce meat. But, astonishingly, by value Wales imports seven times as much meat as it exports. Six thousand years of nutrient stripping and erosion have left our hills so infertile that their productivity is miniscule. Even relatively small numbers of livestock can now keep the hills denuded. Without subsidies, almost all hill-farming would cease. That's not something I'm calling for, but I do believe it's time we began to challenge the system and its outcomes. Among them is a policy that's almost comically irrational and destructive. The major funding that farmers receive is called the single farm payment, which is money given by European taxpayers to people who own land. These people receive a certain amount (usually around £200 or £300), for every hectare they own. To receive it, they must keep the land in what is called "Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition" (GAEC). It's a term straight out of 1984. |

And there's probably from 3 to 5% which is fraud--which is my view on how much fraud in general across the board. 10% is egregious and if it's not being monitored at all it would still be pretty obvious. Now THAT's some well made-up statistics. |

The greatest percentage of food stamps go to Pico Ricans. And the Pico Ricans redeem food stamps at the bodega for 75¢ on the dollar. Fact! Ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. . . . |

1 in 6 Americans gets food stamps?
It's the Cloward and Piven strategy at work, which is a concept created in the 1960's by two NYU professors that in order to collapse the system, you need to develop as many different government assistance programs as humanly possible. With those in place, you have to get as many people on the government dole as possible, and when the number of people relying totally on Uncle Sam equals the number of people paying into the system, it will overload the system and the economy will collapse along with the government. At that point, the capitalistic system will be replaced with a communist or socialist system which does not reward innovation or hard work or thinking outside the box. There are many in the government who want this to happen, as they are doing radio advertisements making food stamps sound cool and hip, and they are going into every retirement community in the country and signing up everybody they can. They have probably already passed the point of no return.

They have probably already passed the point of no return. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1nv8G6UFfc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloward_Piven I can remember a coworker telling me of all the programs they used to have for single mothers. She said they would often pay them to go to school. So they did, just to get paid. The problem? The courses they offered were of little to no use to most people. They were aimed at helping people become employable but they were for either obscure or outdated things. So it was a colossal waste of everyone's time but the women who took did do the programs did benefit monetarily at least while they were doing it and I suppose it employed the teachers. I can't remember the time frame of all this but I think it was 70's or 80's. More recently, my friend's daughter was talked into some stupid program that cost a lot of money and was a waste of everyone's time. She is really not employable due to some mental problems. She is very personable on the phone which people see as an advantage. But her brain works in such a disordered fashion that she is truly incapable of doing any job. But this program was to teach her how to use a computer. They bought her a desktop computer and a desk of her choice but she didn't get to keep these things. They were only for use during the program. And because she makes poor choices, she chose this giant computer desk for her tiny room. She somehow managed to get it in there but in order to get to the computer, she had to sit on the bed because there was no room for the chair. She fiddled around for a year or two, attempting to use the computer and perhaps she did learn how to do a few things on it but it was all rather useless. Then at some point she had to take the computer and desk to them which involved renting a truck. She doesn't drive. She had to get someone to drive the truck for her. They also convinced her once to get a telemarketing job in Kent. She lives in Shoreline which is just north of Seattle. And because she doesn't drive, this meant taking a series of buses to get to work. Her commute time was several hours each day and she had to make many bus changes. My friend was furious over this because her daughter was just incapable of thinking these things through to get to work and back. So she was getting frequent phone calls. Daughter didn't know exactly where she was or what to do from there. She did muddle through the job for about 3 months. The job was only part time and she didn't even earn enough at it to pay for her bus fare! She also got talked into moving into a group home. My friend said in some ways it did help her at least while she was there because she was forced to clean up after herself, a task that she can't seem to figure out how to do at home. But... She was no good at budgeting her money and was constantly running out of it. She had a hard enough time living at home and paying my friend a small amount for rent each month but this place took 1/3 of her disability money. And she doesn't make much because she really only had a full time job for a short period of time before her diagnosis came about. The group home wound up costing her mom a lot of money to get her out of there. She wanted to move but couldn't figure out that she had to give notice so just kept paying and paying the rent. She wound up having everything she owned being infested with not only fleas but bedbugs. And those luckily did not get transported back to my friend's house but she went to great lengths, including replacing all of her furniture. |

There are some safeguards to prevent collecting if you are not entitled, but one on the dole, it is very easy to convert that EBT card to cash. |
