We usta hang out at one all the time. As common as Denny's. Jes a
pancake/coffee chain open all night that tolerated hanger-outers and
stoners. Never gave the racial implications a thought. Even after
the chain imploded from upper mgt malfeasance. At least that was the
news story.

I guess I get a bit riled when ppl talk about Sambo's racial
overtones, like there actually were any. Nope. Not like Denny's,
that actively discriminated against blacks and other minorities.
Sambo's was about as benign as could be. Black, white, green, purple,
ya' ordered a shortstack or you nursed a never-empty cuppa joe fer 3
hrs. No one cared. (shrug)

There is a restaurant in a nearby city that is facing a lot of heat over
its southern red neck image. They specialize in BBQ, real BBQ and not
what most of us here pass off as BBQ, which is basically anything cooked
outside and on a grill.

Having a limited menu of BBQ.... BBQ pork, pulled pork, BBQ ribs, they
got tired of people looking for dishes to suit their particular
agenda....low fat, low salt, vegetarian, vegan, Asian variations,
tomato sauces, kosher, halal etc. so thy had signs up saying they
didn't serve that kind of food. It got a lot of publicity when someoen
took offence to a sign saying that they do not have halal, rice, kabab
and shawarma and never will.

I guess those who live to be offended thought that they could shame them
out of business. The restaurant could not have paid for all the free
advertising.

Yeah, the "me,me,me" mob.

I loved the TX resto that bucked the now-not-so-new frizzee salad trend by
putting a large notice on the salad menu page, NO LAWN CLIPPINGS.

To be honest, both the TX resto and the one with the "halel" notice
really are being provocative. A simple no from the waiter is
sufficient.

A simple no does not work with people who go to a BBQ joint and want
vegetarian, kosher or halal. If you don't meat, or you don't eat pork,
don't go to a BBQ joint.

Vegetarians are out of luck unless they like mac n cheese, beans, or cornbread.

But brisket can be kosher or halal, as can be goat and lamb.

In Munich -- where even the ground beef has pork in it -- the doner kebab is made from turkey, which tastes great cooked low and slow.
