[OT] theories about why a web site is rejected by AV
 

I'm going with the one about a faulty ad being the culprit. I went to
the Hawaiian cooking site twice. The first time got no reaction from
my computer, but the second time... my computer started laboring like
crazy and my WARNING sign popped up.

If I didn't know dsi1 wouldn't post a virus on purpose and if I hadn't
already read ads can trigger this warning, I'd be more concerned.
Fortunately, I have Ad-Block Plus installed so if it's an ad, it won't
load... but I'd be concerned about the entire site if the warning had
popped up the first time I tried to view the link.

I'm getting a warning now too but I saw the picture early this morning, no
problem. It looked very tasty! I would serve that over rice.

Especially if you had just been attacked a day or so before.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback, good info.

Now my computer won't recognize my camera, and I don't know if it's
related. I'm too burned out to try to figure it out just yet.

Your best bet is to go to http://www.webutation.net/ and type in the
site in question. Cookinghawaiianstyle.com appears to be OK - the one
ding against it is that there's some question about it in the
G-rated/Child safety category. The site has a 90 points out of 100,
which is higher than my site which has an 80/100 rating.

My site has no advertising other than my own and sets no cookies or
anything else and is G-rated. It looks like I have to register and get a
Norton Safe Web account and get tested to better my score. I dislike
being forced to play this game but the idea of being branded as having a
bad site is well, bad. Thanks for hitching me on to the site.

Did you say you reformatted your computer? I reformatted mine just
before my one year warranty was up (due to issues that I later found
out were a problem with my browser, not the computer) with the help of
customer service and then left for a 40 day vacation. After I got
home, the USB and other ports worked just fine and did what I needed
them to do.... but a few months ago, I realized my computer is not
communicating with my DVD slot. I really should take it somewhere and
get that fixed, but it's not a pressing issue - so I've
procrastinated.

It appears to pass muster with all three of the safety sites, it's
just the social reputation that's lacking as in zero comments. I
honestly do not understand why that Webutation warning popped up. I
just went there again and no warning, so whatever it is that triggers
it comes and goes.

BTW: I saw an interesting carrot cake variation on Cooking Hawaiian -
it uses coconut milk. Didn't like the texture of the cake in the
image (too smooth for me, I prefer rustic), so I need to figure out
how to use coconut milk in *my* recipe. The first thing I see is my
recipe says not to drain the pineapple, so that might be how they are
able sneak the coconut milk in.

The Firefox and Chrome browsers use a service to list known malicious
sites. I assume IE does too but I never use IE. I would trust the
internal messages that originate from these two browsers but I would put
the Webutation warning in the same category as those pop-up windows that
say your computer has been infected by viruses i.e., scarey sales pitches.

OTOH, I registered my website with the Norton SafeWeb site. It's
supposed to take a could of weeks for them to check it out. Actually,
it's kind of a dirty trick to use a site in this way. My guess is that
the cookinghawaiianstyle would be quite upset to find out that this was
happening. I sure would be.

That's a good idea. I should have thought of it. Heck I like to put
coconut in things. I have a bag of NOH haupia mix that's mostly sugar,
powdered coconut, and cornstarch, that I've added to waffle and pancakes
and baked goods - it's pretty spiffy stuff.

No, I haven't done that. I restored to an earlier date, for all the
good that did me.

I have problems with that all the time. I'm a DVD slot killer, I have
concluded. I bought an external drive. Killed one of those, too. I
try to eject properly. That sounds rude, but you know what I mean.

A caution-- Kaspersky just went to Pure 3 from Pure 2. Not sure if
the upgrade is always free. [it was for me but I've had v2 installed
for a while]

Also, I hope that is the multiple computer price. I pay about $65
to renew for 3 computers- straight from Kaspersky.

Otherwise-- I'll jump on the Kaspersky bandwagon. I've been using
it as the main AV for 4-5 years.
