Wake up and smell the coffee, Gary. Nobody is a friend on usenet.
Some of us have met in person or in the chat room, but most of us have
only developed online friendships which shouldn't ever be mistaken for
real life - although obviously some people do. The fact remains that
people I've met in RL never address me by my real name online. Usenet
posters are simply polite to each other (more or less), unless they
are total assshats like Steve Wertz. He doesn't use my real name to
be warm & fuzzy, he does it because he knows it ****es me off. He
used to be a drunken drug addict and claims to be clean at this point.
I don't know if he is a bald faced liar or not (I suspect he is lying)
and to be perfectly honest, I don't care. His personality hasn't
changed one iota - that's evidence enough for me. Too bad you chose
to emulate him.

duh... Shelley is waiting for a denial or a "So what?" Then he has a live fuse
that he can touch off whenever he feels like it.

Are you really this obtuse?

Jill, no hard feelings here. I understand it's a slip - because you
don't do it consistently. I also know that you know how I feel about
the subject and chalk it up to a fingers typing faster than the brain
is remembering when it happens.

That's just not true. Many profound relationships have developed with
people who have met on line, many have married, happily. sf is an
imbecile... anyone with a modicum of IQ can fathom that. sf is very
likely the least educated poster at RFC, the dwarf is no brain but
compared to sf he's Einstein.

Maybe not for you but I have some very close friends now that I met on
usenet many years ago. I've also met a few in person and the friendship got
better. 4 of us from one newsgroup started also writing personally....15
years now and still going strong...we all write each day.

That said though, friends are not black and white, they come in all levels
of friendship from aquaintences that you talk to briefly occasionally up to
best friends that hang out together often.

Here's the difference, SF. I've used your real first name for quite a few
months now. It just seemed more friendly and personal to me. I never had any
idea that it ****ed you off - you should have said something long ago to me
and I would have stopped. Now that I know, I'm stopping. geez.

> Too bad you chose to emulate him.

Just know this everyone. I don't emulate anyone. I am myself here. Jill
said the same thing to me about "emulating Sheldon" once when I made a
boobie joke. This all here is just ME. Just because I have similar humor
sometimes does not mean anything other than I might be similar to those 2
fellows. A little off-humor is fun sometimes. And it can be funny when the
anal ppl get offended. It really makes you want to prod them more even if
you didn't plan to.

I was hoping you'd notice that others here are not that rude and quit
on your own, but thank you for finally stopping. Too bad it takes
being whacked on the head with a 2 x 4 for you to get the idea. What
made you think it was okay if the only poster who does it on a
consistent basis is the one I absolutely can't stand? Never mind, I
don't care. It's obvious you don't pick up on social cues and need to
be told everything directly. It's over. Now we can get back to
exchanging cyber friendly pleasantries and cooking information again.

I don't know about "profound relationships" (to quote Sheldon), although
a few folks from RFC are couples who met online and married or are at
least significant partners. And yes, some of us have met in person. sf
herself mentioned cooking with ChrisD this past weekend. I met Chris
myself a number of years ago.

I talk on the phone with a few folks from RFC, but rarely. I'm not one
for talking on the phone every day or even every week. Yet when I was
hospitalized with diverticulitis, I called Nancy Young. She put the
word out to anyone who might care, Jill is in the hospital.

I consider Nancy to be one of my best friends, even though I've never
met her in person. I was taken by ambulance in my pajamas... she asked
if I needed anything. I sure could use some underwear. Guess what?
She sent me a package underwear! LOLOL Is that a friend or what?! We
still chuckle about it. She also sent me some books. So did Margaret
Suran.

All this to say of course, you can develop friendships online.

News flash: it is standard practice on not only USEnet, but discussion
boards in general, for people to use others' real names -- particularly
first names -- whenever they are known, whether or not the two people
involved have a personal relationship.

It would be considered rude or inconsiderate to post others' addresses,
telephone numbers, or other personal information without permission, but
that does not apply to names.

The fact that you feel the need to hide your identity does not bind
anyone else's posting behavior. If you want to hide, you need to do a
better job of it.

And yeah, I've been on USEnet and discussion groups in general for about
as long as anyone around, back to early 300 baud dial-up BBS's. And in
all those years, I've never before heard anyone bitch about their real
first name being outed. You are a piece of work.

Funny that you should mention that today of all times, sf. My face today
looks like you whacked me with a 2X4 yesterday!

Yesterday afternoon, I slipped on a plastic bag on the floor. It was like
stepping on watery ice. As I started my "slow motion" fall backwards, my
left hand grabbed my vacuum cleaner which came down right with me. My right
hand grabbed the table there and although it did slow my fall, I still came
down and somehow bashed my FACE on the edge of the table.

It didn't knock me out but came close. I immediately went in to the
bathroom to look in the mirror. I had 3 bleeding cuts all around my right
eye. Later on, the eye turned red and the skin around it swelled up a bit.
arrghhhh! Still bad this morning but seems to be improving well later today
so i guess this won't require a doctor visit.

Very disturbing afternoon though. Just when you think that staying at home
on a Sunday afternoon should be safe enough. :-O

Really? It IS considered extremely offensive and rude to use someones real
name if they are using a nic in a newsgroup, even if you happen to know
their real name. Just because you do it, doesn't make it OK.

It is rude to use their real name if *they* are not using it. There's a
reason why they're not using it.

LOL- sf was the one who sent me someone else's address as I wanted to
thank them for some seeds he had sent me. Kinda hard to hide when you
post hundreds of times a month!

oooooo-kay....

Is there any chance that by your own behavior, you earned the mockery? Just
hypothetically, of course.
