Anyone know how to get a raccoon to leave?
I live in the city, so cannot shoot it... It pulled down some soffit and is
living in the area between that and the gutter and the house. But when it gets cooler it will probably try and get in the house... I played talk radio loud for a few days and thought it had left, but just saw/heard it again. I threw some rocks at it but then it just went back up into the soffit. Hope my roofer gets the gutters and roof done before winter... I had to spend $300 earlier this year to get rid of couple squirrels in a different area of the roof. That's secure, but now there's this other other area. |

But from what I have read it is next to impossible to get them to leave. One suggestion that I read was to use a radio and play loud music to drive them out. But then you would also have to listen to the loud music and it wasn't overly effective. If you can, try luring them in a trap. But then they would need to be released elsewhere. |

Yes, that's what I did. Talk radio. A website said they don't like human voices. I tried NPR, but it's back. I may have to go Limbaugh but then I will be the one that will move out. What's Billy's number?... I used Critter Control here for the squirrels. Effective, but expensive. As most things in life. |

If they pay rent and keep the room clean, I'd be fine with them living here. They have to buy their own food though. If I give them free food and beer, they will just invite friends over and party all night (they are nocturnal). And they will all be lying on the couch when I get up in the morning and sleep on it all day. I don't want to have to deal with hungover raccoons sleeping on my couch all day... Again. |

You could try using an electric fence. If the current is too high and kills the raccoon, oh dear, how terrible! Bright flashing lights may also help. http://www.richardfisher.com |

They are vermin. They are a big time rabies vector, are mean as shit, and will attack a human. They are smart and very pretty. Just the opposite of possums, which are ugly, stinky, not aggressive, and are beneficial scavengers. > > Boron --Bryan |

Invest in a humane animal trap. Trap the critter and relocate it several miles from where you live. Keep it to yourself when you do it, since it's illegal to do that in many areas. Possums, rabbits, squirrels, raccoons and lots of other little beasts have happy new homes that way. :-) Cheri |

In a new area they don't know their way around they probably get beat up and mugged by the locals already living there. Not sure it's more humane to relocate them. It's like people that can't take care of their dog, and release them out in the woods. |

Anyone know how to get a raccoon to leave?
We don't grow anything here that raccoons find edible - only pecans, pears,
acorns and Christmas peppers. One of our neighbors attempted a koi pond and the raccoons thought it was a fine sushi bar. Another has a lovely border of scuppernongs and didn't have a prayer of success to get them safe to harvest. Both solved the problem with some sort of hot wiring. I have no idea how they went about it but it was very successful. Polly |

Anyone know how to get a raccoon to leave?
From another time and place:
"This entire thread reminds me of a story from one of the Roger Caras books. Very loosely recalled, he had moved to a house in the country, and suddenly, there were the mice. Didn't want to use the old fashioned traps, since they looked like Beatrix Potter mice, so bought a little carousel-like thing, designed to capture and rotate, capture and rotate. Baited it with Brie, and such-like. Came out the next morning and found a mousie. Had already located the perfect pristine wilderness down the driveway, across the highway, and through the pasture. Took mousie out there, let him go, and watched him scamper away, the way he had come. Mousie runs back across the pasture, across the highway, and starts up the driveway. At the top of the drive is an entire row of cats, who have been watching the whole thing. Mousie hits the line; no more mousie. Roger Caras said every time he went down to the mailbox after that, the cats all lined up, hoping he'd bring back another one." -- Ann's Little Brother Bob |

I've had mice here too. And another place. I read they have a strong homing instinct and can travel three miles to get back where they were. Though as the story above illustrates, not without a lot of obstacles. |

Learned yesterday they aren't coming to do the reinspection of the roof and gutters until Oct 8th. I started this thing 3 months ago and now back to square one and now with some soffit pulled down and a raccoon in the mix... I was hoping making it uncomfortable would make it leave and go find somewhere else. But yesterday when it was above the wood paneling, I banged on the wall repeatedly and loudly with a stick and turned on talk radio very loud-- and it didn't seem fazed. I'll let the inspector know about it. Don't want them being surprised and falling off the roof! If I get the soffit repaired, is the raccoon just going to come back and pull it down again? They said that about squirrels. |

I've seen them go in the catch basin by here a few times. One time I was riding by on my bike late at night and there was a mother and 3-4 cubs(?). As I went by in the street, she looked at me like if I came one inch nearer she was going to fight me to the death. |

And yes, people eat them. Not I. http://www.backwoodsbound.com/zracoon.html I do not go near raccoons here, nor even things as seemingly innocuous as stray kitties. We've had rabies incidents within a few miles of the house. Boron. |
