OT - Don't get testy with me...
But this is a test to see if I can post using this account.
Becca and I have been missing from rfc since we moved because of a change in ISP and the fact that I couldn't figure out how to configure this so it works. If you see this, it means I figured it out and please forgive me for the OT post. If you can't see this, well, you won't have anything to bitch about. Thanks, George L |

Especially if you have to call them for "help". Most of those youngsters have never heard of a newsgroup. At any rate, you made it! Other than that, how was the move? I hope everything (other than the newsgroup thing) went smoothly. Moving is such a PITA. I'm considering moving and absolutely dread the thought. Jill |

The move itself was OK. Not everything fit in the biggest truck I could rent so we had to make a second trip a week later to get the rest. (4 hours each way). Got smart this time and hired a couple of day laborers to do all the heavy lifting and carrying... I'm getting too old for this kind of work. The biggest problems are in fixing this place up. It is 70 years old and it seems like every time I fix one thing, two others break. This morning the sewer pipe is clogged. It is always something. But we found a buyer for our house in Shreveport and are waiting for a closing date. Don't have much time for Usenet. Been reading the rfc group on Facebook but haven't been posting much... just not enough time. George L |

Having had problems with a major cross country moving company many years ago and knowing that regulations still haven't changed enough to give the consumer enough power to fight them because "insurance" is a farce to give you a false sense of security, I think PODS are the way to go. It was cheaper to rent a Penske truck and hire a couple of guys to load it up for us. John drove the truck and we took our time (three days). When we got here I called a friend who sent over a couple more guys to unload it for us. One of the reasons I'm considering moving is all the damn restrictions the HOA imposes. They wouldn't let me have a PODS container sitting in my driveway. Hell, you're not even allowed to put a For Sale sign in your yard. I remember my mother was in a panic because her automatic garage door broke. She couldn't close the door and she was afraid someone from the HOA would notice. (I was able to close and raise it manually for her until we found a repairman.) Nit-picky stuff like this is about to drive me crazy. Jill |

You're going to have a hard time finding a buyer with problems like that because buyers do their due diligence and will buy or not buy based on how the HOA functions - which means you'd better fix that place up to be attractive or price it attractively to sell. If it's priced to sell, you'll get multiple offers. I know of a little two bedroom house (beautifully renovated) that was priced at $550,000. They showed it for a week and had 15 offers; 3 were all cash at asking price and above. That was just last week. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

I know several people who have moved with PODS and said it was the most convenient and least expensive than any other method save DIY with your own vehicle. If you rent a truck you have to work fast as you rent by the day, with PODS you have a month to load, have it moved, and unload at destination. The PODS costs less for the month than renting a truck for a day. Depending on distance moving the PODS typically costs less than driving the truck. And then you have to pay your hired help regardless. Personally I found using a professional moving van service (Mayflower) the best value. If you do your own packing it's well worth the few dollars more for professional movers. Mayflower even supplies cartons, cushioning material, and tape. My move here cost me $1,100 (w/ins) and nothing was damaged or lost. I packed and unpacked my cartons but the movers wrapped furnishings (in padded shrink-wrap and blankets), set everything in the proper rooms and unwrapped. I own a lot of stuff, I'd not consider moving myself. Watching these guys work is like watching a well rehearsed orchestra, never missed a beat... it's easy to see they've done this before. I've made many moves, always professionally except once when I rented a small U-Haul van... everything that could go wrong did... one of its recapped tires fell apart and broke the gas fill tube... I could no longer put gas in so I rented another truck from a nearby private gas station, transfered all my stuff, and left the U-Haul by the side of the road. I would never again attempt to move myself. So where are you moving to? |

I do believe they are. However, my neighbors don't think so. And these are people who don't live here full time. They visit their "vacation homes" (Yes! Just like on HGTV!) a few months out of the year. Heh. > You're going to have > a hard time finding a buyer with problems like that because buyers do > their due diligence and will buy or not buy based on how the HOA > functions There are new people here all the time! Why, they've just installed new "welcome" signs on the gates LOL Frankly, I don't know who has the money to pay all the exhorbitant fees. They ignored me for a while, then suddenly discovered I lived here. OH! We forgot we haven't charged you. Arrrgh! (snippage) Yeah, yeah. I'm still NOI upgrading the kitchen to sell the place. Yes, but people don't even consider how they'll move until the house is sold AND they know where they are going. You may not be able to sell that house for several years. >>> I checked on PODS when I made the move to SC. Prohibitively >>> expensive! It was cheaper to rent a Penske truck and hire a couple of >>> guys to load it up for us. >> >> Us? I thought you lived in TN alone. >> >You know better. Oh yeah, I know you lived with a cat and a bird. PODS is actually the least expensive way to move, I'd have done that myself only I really didn't want to load and unload all my heavy/bulky furnishings for the few hundred dollars more than the price of PODS. My neighbor across the road moved with PODS, in fact he had two containers sitting on his property for three months until his house was completed. But he has four grown sons who arrived to schlep all his belongings. My next door neighbor is moving on 05/18, they are having professional movers, they are moving back to CA. They've been here five years and couldn't sell their house in CA so they are moving back. Oddly the person who bought their house here is the last owner. He sold because his eyes were failing to the point that he could no longer see well enough to care for the house or for himself so he moved in with his elderly mother who lives nearby. Finally he risked the surgery and now he can see again, not perfect but well enough to care for himself. He called and asked to buy the house back and it was like a gift to the present owners because they were struggling to maintain two abodes (two mortgages). I'm sorry to see the present owners leave as they are a friendly retired couple with no kids, just an old dog and two old cats. The old owner was kind of a recluse. From all the negatives you've described about where you live I doubt you will sell for a very long time unless you accept a very low price. Often it pays to sell low just to be rid of what is obviously an expensive burdon and move on with ones life. In your case since the house cost you nothing (and has no mortgage) whatever you net will be a gift. I think it's way too much house for a single person anyway. You really can't afford to live there and since you don't play golf and you don't socialize with the other residents living in that situation is of no benefit to you, it's just a big drain financially and emotionally... it sounds to me that you really aren't living there, you're isolated, you're lonely and you're barely surviving. My advice is to price it for a quick sale, but know with certainty the situation where you are going... be very careful you *don't trade black dog for monkey*, if you get my drift (old Belize saying #21). If you let anyone stay after closing you have no legal recourse if anything is damaged or missing, and if they or any of their guests get hurt there they will sue you. |

I was a softie when we bought this place. The old owner asked if he could leave his four horses in the barn for a few days because they did not yet have the barn set up at their new place. I agreed, provided that he clean it out when they were done. They mucked out the stables while the horses were here, leaving a big pile of shit covered straw, and when they took the horses they did nothing to clean out the barn. That left me in the position of having four filthy stalls and never even having owned a horse. |

Consider yourself very lucky that all they did was leave you some horseshit, did you compost it and plant a garden? They could have caused great damage to your barn and other property and you'd have no recourse because you invited them, they were your guests. |
