Default What Is Your Most Or Least Favorite Type Of Nut?

I like all nuts and most often buy cashews, peanuts, almonds, pecans and
walnuts.

Do you like to just eat them as is, or have special things you use them
in? I use a lot with my baking.

The only nut I really don't care for the flavor of is black walnuts, as
are so strong, or something.

Maybe some of you grow certain varieties of nuts in your yard? They
don't do well here in Alaska, but Swede's sister use to send us fresh
pecans from her yard, in AR. before she passed away. She even shelled
them!

We have wild hazelnuts all over here, but they are tiny and the birds
get them all.
My fave is pistachio.

Did you learn not to like them before you knew about Herman Cain?

Favorite: tie between pecans and macadamia, either of which can
go on almost anything and make it taste better. Super by themselves.

Least fav: Brazil nuts, which I find starchy and flavorless and useless.

I don't really like pea-nuts but I'm practically addicted to the rest:
cashews, pistachios, filberts, walnuts, brazil nuts, you name them!

Unfortunately, I cannot eat nuts. It is a shame because I like most
nuts. I love pistachios, cashews, hazelnuts, filberts, Brazil nuts.
Pecans are okay, especially in pecan pie, but I am not crazy about walnuts.

My favorite nut is the cashew. Roasted and salted. A fellow at work
used to bring peanuts in which were pretty good. His wife sauteed
them, and added some Filipino hot sauce while they were sauteeing.
Pretty good stuff.

I like pistachios in the shell that are salted.

Walnuts are good in pastries. For example a Hungarian style walnut
roll. Also a Hungarian style poppy seed roll is very good as well.

I tried to find a recipe, but they are quite different. I think I
like the one with the apple and walnut filling, but is it really
supposed to have apple in it?

I forgot about macadamia nuts....love them! When hubby took me out for
dinner on Valentine's Day, I ordered Macadamia Encrusted Baked Halibut
served with peach chutney on the side...it was to die for!

I know what you mean about Brazil nuts. I think it was sf said that
said, they were the last nut left in a can of mixed nuts, and same here.

We also like pistachios, but I sure wish you could buy them already
shelled?! If they have them as such, I've sure never seen them?!

When at Sam's Club the other day, I noticed a package of "shelled"
pistachios that was 24 oz at about $15 (give or take). Three pounds of
'regular' pistachios in the shell were not quite $16. HTH.

I love all nuts. My favorite is pistachio. My favorite to cook with is
walnut, though pecan has it's place.

In addition for just eating nuts, I love peanuts, cashews, almonds and
brazil.

I like most of them. I'm not supposed to eat them, but every once in a very
great while I'll buy roasted peanuts or cashews to snack on. I love
pistachios but cripes they're expensive! Even moreso, macadamia nuts. I've
never been a big fan of pecans.

To eat alone - cashews and pistachios.

Cooked - pecan pie!

Don't know where you are, but in the southeast Publix has
a couple of varieties in nuts and in produce and I've seen
them elsewhere as well. There are many packagings to
be found on google. If you wander off your beaten path
you'll find them. But when I've had them after a few days
I start feeling "gee, this is boring; opening the nuts was
pretty much fun" YMMV, certainly.

My favorite is cashews. I always eat those first out of a container
of mixed nuts. I eat the almonds next. I toss the hazelnuts and
Brazil nuts. Hazelnuts are tasteless and Brazil nuts are blech.
Pistachios are okay. I just never buy them. Walnuts are only good in
baked items. Pecans I can eat plain or in baked goods. I've never
had black walnuts. Hickory nuts are good but the shells are as hard
as a rock. My mom grew up on a farm and they had two hickory nut
trees down by the creek. I can remember picking them up off the
ground and pounding them with rocks trying to crack the shells. They
never cracked open evenly. You always had to pick the meat out in
pieces.

I'm sure there's a nut I don't like but I haven't found
it yet. From peanuts to brazil nuts, I love them all.

If I eat too many cashews I feel ooky, so I don't snack
on them too often.

Cashews are high on the nut allergy listing, the ooky
(great term) feeling might be a true allergy or sensitivity:

If you follow Andrew zimmern, he hates walnuts.

If you have never tried it, buy some raw peanuts and roast them yourself.
So much better.

I get an assorted batch of nuts. Like walnuts the best, so does my cat.

Default Brazil Nuts

Try using them in place of pine nuts to make pesto.

Like most nuts, Brazil nuts benefit from being toasted to bring out
their flavor. Also, because of their size, if you want to incorporate
them into other foods, they usually need to be chopped. (You could
sprinkle whole peanuts over kung pao chicken, for example, but whole
Brazil nuts would just be too big for an application like that.)

With a little imagination, Brazil nuts can be great ingredients. For
example, try pounding toasted Brazil nuts, lemongrass (just the tender
inner part), garlic, ginger, and Thai chiles with a mortar and pestle
until you get a pesto-like consistency. Heat coconut milk in a pan and
add paste. Cook until fragrant and bubbling. Add shrimp which have been
peeled and deveined. Cook until shrimp are done, about 3 minutes
(depending on the size and temperature of the shrimp). Garnish with
cilantro and serve with jasmine rice.

Since it's "tagine weekend" here's a tagine idea using Brazil nuts: Cut
two zucchini into chunks. Put chunks into a colander and sprinkle with
kosher salt. Mix a large pinch of saffron threads with 2 tablespoons of
hot water. Allow to steep until needed. Coarsely chop an onion. Cut the
meat off the bones of six chicken thighs and cut into bite-sized chunks.
Open a small can of tomato paste and pre-stage 2 tablespoons of the
paste. Thinly slice one quarter of a preserved lemon. Chop up five
good-sized Brazil nuts. Heat olive oil in a tagine over medium heat.
When oil is hot, add Brazil nuts and cook until golden brown. Remove
Brazil nuts from the pan and reserve until later. Raise heat to
medium-high; add the chicken meat and chopped onion. Season with salt
and black pepper. Cook for a few seconds and add tomato paste. Cook
until the tomato paste takes on a rusty color. Add the saffron and its
soaking water, stirring to incorporate. Rinse off zucchini chunks and
scatter over the top. Scatter preserved lemon slices over all, then
lightly sprinkle with sugar. Cover and cook until chicken is done, about
15 minutes. Sprinkle with chopped cilantro and fried Brazil nuts.

Fiddyment Farms (based in Lincoln, California -- quite convenient for
me!) sells them already shelled; you can order them online.

I don't really have a favorite but I tend to eat more walnuts and pecans
than anything. I don't really like roasted cashews at all but I do like raw
ones. Actually I prefer any nuts to be raw except for peanuts which I know
are not really a nut. I don't like black walnuts either.

My favorites are Almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, and walnuts.

I do not like cashews, pecans, macadamias, cashews, or brazil nuts.

On one adventurous day not too long ago I did the experiment. Even
if your effort was worthless, the shelled ones were a better buy. They
looked better, they are better covered in salt, and they seem to be
roasted more uniformly.

OTOH-- A bowl of pistachios with the shells on will take longer to
eat so less calories per snack.

Jim
[but I still buy the shelled ones anyway-- great garnish for a carrot
and black bean salad]

I think that's the thing....the extra time to shell them individually. The
pre-shelled ones get boring to eat fast but by shelling each one, they are
very addictive, and you tend to quit sooner.

It's a good show. I enjoy it.

Thank you. I had never thought beyond the eat-them-as-they-come-
from-the-can stage. Very good ideas, they all sound wonderful as
do the techniques of using them. I really appreciate your efforts
to spread the word about Brazil nuts.

Default What Is Your Most Or Least Favorite Type Of Nut?

Mom always made her Chex mix at Christmas with cashews and would get so
mad that we would pick out all the cashews-I find cashews too rich-get
nauseous if I eat more than 2-3.

I love pecans and cheese. Baked pecans that have been seasoned either
sweet or savory are pretty good. Pecans make a pretty good pie crust.

Black walnuts in dark choc fudge are great. I vaguely recall as child
eating black walnut cake (?grandma?) and thought it quite good.

I don't like eating raw almonds but I love almond (paste) croissants for
example. I always have almond flour on hand for low carb baking. This
mornng I am eating a warm from the oven divine almond scone (purchased
in the cookie dough refrigerated section at Walmart-well worth the $2.50
quick-bake price. Barista Baking Company/Champion Foods out of Illinois)

I have no impression of the taste of pistachios but they are unappealing
visually.

I have always wanted to try "chestnuts roasting on an open fire." :-)

the poster that keeps asking such survey questions. I can't figure out why
so many feel compelled to respond.

I have the same deal with hazelnuts. LOVE 'em; but the birds just ravage those bushes.

I'm a pistachio person as well.

+2, Judy.

hahaha YEAH! They must be good since there's an old traditional song about
them. I've never tried them either but that's on my list of things to do
before it's too late. ;o
