Pasta rack? but why would it be stained and varnished so I'm probably wrong.

No clue, but perhaps it's a rack for passing bread/toast slices at the
dining table?

It reminds me of a 1960's Popular Mechanics magazine project. 'Bread
Board Magazine Rack' - [I don't remember that title-- just the
ill-conceived genre]

Clever always out-ranked practicality in those projects.

Could it be a cradle for bread dough rising so that the surface of the
baked bread loaf then has rounded-lines from end to end?

The ends look like they have a half circle to hold a dowel or
something...a paper towel rack???

It looks like a plate holder for someone who does not have kitchen
shelves. Or a pot cover holder.

"S. HITCHCOCK . R. F. D. Box 60 . Coventry, Conn" - Hitchcock was a
relatively famous furniture / chair company in Connecticut. I suspect it
isn't kitchen related, and is almost certainly not a pasta drying rack.

Looks like something one uses to hold and pass napkins across the
table.

A pasta drying rack would have to be much taller, I would think.
