That's how I do it, too. Then you can take those half-circles, turn
them clockwise, and cut again to make diced onion.

The dumbest thing I ever saw on Foodtv (besides Emeril and Anne
Burrell) was when they used to constantly carry on about how one could
take a whole onion and cut off one end, slice crossways almost to the
other end to dice an onion.
