Hass is grown in California and I prefer it for most uses, but if I'm going to smush it up for guacamole I don't care what variety it is - I just want it to be ripe. http://www.avocado.org/avocado-variety-browser/ -- Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground. |

California avocados are creamy, buttery and flavorful. Florida varieties are...not. It's harder to tell the difference once you add all the garlic, jalapeno, salt, etc. but tasted plain there's a big difference. Hawaiian avocados are even tastier and huge in comparison. gloria p |

There are several varieties and they're grown in several locations world wide... many sold in CA are not grown there. The avocado is not even native to CA. Again, once they're mashed no one can tell which one comes from where, and they're always different ripeness too so you can't go by texture... you have as much chance of guessing which avocado in mashed avocado as you do which peanuts in PB. hehe, notice the dwarf avocado is a swertz: http://www.food.com/library/avocado-190 |

Shoprite had both.. One was Hass avocados at 2 for 5 bucks and California
avocados at 2 for 3 bucks.. The difference was the Hass were dark and had pebbled skins and the California were smooth skinned and were light green in color.. -- "Sqwertz" > wrote in message ... > On Thu, 28 Jul 2011 08:29:08 -0400, sharkman wrote: > >> I usually make guacamole using Hass avocados but California avocados were >> on >> sale so I bought them instead. >> Anybody know if they will they work as well as the Hass in making >> guacamole? >> thanks >> sharkman > > Do you mean Florida avocados? Avocados are good (albeit usually expensive!), and it'd be great to try one from Hawaii. Heck, I didn't even know there were other avocado varieties other than Haas & Calvado. They're simply called avocados. California grows many kinds of avocado, it's not necessary to mention California... in fact many avocados sold in CA are imported from Mexico and Central America. When I lived in CA only the price was posted, folks there who buy avocado know what type by looking and season. Most avocados have a season. Hass are the only type harvested all year but those sold in CA are not necessarily grown in CA, many CA Hass are exported to other locations because they bring a higher price elsewhere. Most Hass avocados sold in CA are imported from Mexico. Most of the produce industry is like that, they sell the culls locally but the best of the crop are shipped to where they bring the most profit. Even the meat industry does the same... restuarants in Chicago and NYC serve better beef than one finds in TX and CO eateries... cattlemen sell where they make the most profit. |

I'm not surprised that your SIL gets artichokes from California! If you want big artichokes, buy them from Costco. I've never seen bigger, even at the farm stands that stock 10 different sizes. They don't sell them here in St. Louis anymore either from what I've seen. It's hard to find a perfectly ripe avocado here, and many are so under-ripe that they will never be perfect. If you buy an unripened one, you are best off monitoring it until it starts to soften, then refrigerate it for a few days so it ripens slowly and evenly. We got back from vacation yesterday, so our taco night couldn't include avocado > > > gloria p --Bryan |
