Local farms contribute more than fresh produce
they contribute food for the food banks. Locally several truck
farmers contribute to food banks by setting aside some plantings or allowing gleaners to come in . Here's a story from todays local paper. http://www.bellinghamherald.com/2011...egetables.html and here's a slide show http://www.bellinghamherald.com/2011...bIQW.St.39.JPG I think it's great and this particular farm is one of my favorites. They grow fabulous strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and vegetables. |

Under Jewish law, farmers may not glean their own fields. Gleaning is left to widows and orphans. Jerry -- Engineering is the art of making what you want from things you can get. |

Many of the food banks in my area will not accept produce from local gardeners. They will accept food from a certified farm that is USDA inspected. So as a local gardener the extra produce goes into the compost pile. -- Enjoy Life... Nad R (Garden in zone 5a Michigan) |

Nah, it helps the soil Many places that hand out food wants someone to be responsible if someone gets sick. One can give the food directly to a person, but no organization will do this. -- Enjoy Life... Nad R (Garden in zone 5a Michigan) |

When one is a local farmer, the same person is buying locally and using local stuff (Fertiliser, local help, paying elec. and gas)- in the same manner you are and we should all be doing the same. Farmers who are growing locally are using the same services you are. Just Do It!- as NIKE once said- nobody is harmed. with aloha, "local" farmer Cea |
