Just a thought. When I got Thunderbird, I didn't find rec.food.cooking
either ... then I thought to look for a folder labeled just rec. Click
on that and you might find the newsgroup in there.

With Agent, you need to DL all the newsgroups your server has first;
then you navigate (use "find") to rec.food.cooking and subscribe.
