Even in nooyawk, if yoose get caught doing yoose sex stuff with them

In Virginia, we have both and the state tax collectively (add car and
land property taxes) can come close to federal taxes.

There's a federal excise tax on cigarettes and tobacco as well as sales tax.

Only time we pay tax on a car is when it's purchased but of course there's
that annoying registration renewal each year. For my county it's $89 and
of course those lovely property taxes are due each year. Thankfully,
Social Security nor pension plans or 401k's are taxed here.

Every state has their own method of dipping into their citizens wallet.

Yes, thanks, excise tax is what I meant. I could imagine charging that
on clearly unhealthy food items. Why only on cigarettes?

Going to 12 years myself. In Australia you need a dedicated mortage to
smoke.

Some of us get it in bulk as we have storage for it. I go through
30lbs dog kibble every month. I refer to the 2 dogs as beagles but
actually one of them is a slightly underweight 52lb mixed breed that
got labeled jokingly (?) as a beagle-bull mastiff mix. 40lbs cat
litter would be about 3 months here.

Yeah, got a shock when my car tax came in. Over 500$ this time. I got
my first new car ever (and never will again but it was time for it at
last). Nissan Rogue and not the top of the line extras set. Bit under
20K once all the taxes and stuff were added.

His were an 18 pack at 1.45 (plus tax). He missed that Harris Teeters
was 1.29 for same size.

I think that is the regular price here for a dozen but they are so
often on sale, I wait for the sale and get an extra carton to tide to
the next sale. Using sales, I probably average .79 a dozen here.

Looks like I was wrong too, it's seeming like 6% on precooked foods
(McD's, Deli at supermarket) not 7.5. We do show some of the highest
property taxes in the nation though in Virginia Beach.

Maybe Gary just didn't want to drive to Harris Teeters. :)

I, for one, am not inclined to drive to different supermarkets just to
save a few cents on a carton of eggs. Doesn't save much in the long run.

Yes, and they think by calling many of them "fees" it makes them more

But why tax cigarettes but not fast food, coca cola and high risk
sports like skiing and mountain climbing?

We know taxes are added to what we buy, but we never see it. It is just
always included in the price.

The state has no interest in preserving the health of its citizens,
because people are expected to pay for their own health care.
The federal government, in fact, would be better off if people died
before they drew a lot of Social Security.

Better idea to do it that way, I always wonder why they don't here.

Better to see it, then politicians know raising it brings bad results
for them! We used to have a hidden tax and people just thought the
shops, or manufacturer were increasing the price but now they have to
debate it and no government really wants to be seen raising it. Fine
by me.

That's what they are counting on, hence the monetary incentives
to wait a few more years before applying for it. I'm about to
apply for Medicare but I'm also seriously thinking about doing
Social Security too. I'll keep working but I can bank those SS
monthly payments.

I'm not talking about not knowing it before new taxes are added, I'm talking
about if the sales tax is 8.5% add it to the price. If it's going up have
the discussion, etc., but if it happens then add it to the price in the
store.

I forget which PM was very clear about not including sales tax in the
price of products. He was adamant that the tax had to be added so that
people knew how much tax they were paying because it is important to
know that how much we are paying for government programs. If you want
more, you are going to have to pay more.

I appreciate that concept. OTOH, it is kinda nice to see a price and
know that is what you are going to pay. When travelling in various
restaurants it was always a nice surprise to order you items and when
the bill came it was the sum of the prices of those items. There was no
sales tax added to the total and no tip expected.

I got much better prices (total purchase) at Food Lion. I wasn't
going to drive an extra 2 miles (round trip) to Harris Teeter
just to save 16 cents on 18 eggs. :)

Human nature. People see a lower price in the store and are
relatively happier about the purchase. The extra X% can be blamed on
the government. They remember the $9.95 that was on the price tag
and forget the $0.85 that was added to the total that they paid.

No, but before when the tax was not shown separately, it went up more
frequently. Since it has to be shown on the receipt as a separate
issue, pointing out that all the stuff you bought incurred this amount
in tax, I don't think it has been raised even once :)

Maybe yours is always shown, but ours wasn't.

Before the ST there was the Federal Sales Tax that was never shown, I
knew it altered on the frequent side when working for a photographer
who always made a point of showing on his bill the portion that he
would not receive :)

I find I am used to it, but it still hurts when you buy something like
a car to see such large amounts :(

This isn't the same thing but it bugs me when stores require a "loyalty
card" to get lower prices. Shelf price says $5 but with a card it's $4.

They could sell it to everyone for the lesser price but choose not to.
Sorry, I'll shop where there isn't a blatant attempt to jack up the
prices unless I have a "card".

Kroger is like that, and I hate it. My regular store has lower prices,
and the loyalty card gets me coupons that further reduce the price.

I suppose, but for me, if I know the sales tax is 8.5% I would just as soon
have it added to the shelf price. The time to scream about it is when they
are raising it...again and I never forget the tax. :)

That sort of sounds like the sneaky thing the politicians do here with their
salaries, people would be outraged that they gave themselves raises, so they
made it automatic every year and no mention is made of it. The city I live
in does it with some things too.

You got that right, it's annoying as Hell. My opinion is...just put the
damned item on sale and none of this must have card, must buy 4 to get the

I don't know who in the marketing department thought this was a great
idea. It's ridiculous. I don't shop in stores that require a loyalty
card to get the lower price.

In my area, Food Lion and Piggly Wiggly have cards. I don't shop there.

As an adult I lived my life in the Memphis, TN area. Kroger required a
card. It wasn't convenient to me, I didn't shop there. I did stop in
there once to buy a seafood platter to take to a party at my brother's
house. I didn't have a Kroger card, so the checker asked the guy in
line with me if she could scan his card so I'd get a discount. Nice
guy, he said no problem.

(From what I understand, there are also cards the checkers can use to
scan. So what's the point?)

This young man at Kroger was buying a card and a single rose to give to
his girlfriend. With the swipe of a card it looks like he also bought
her a couple of party platters of cold shrimp and crab claws. LOL

LOL indeed.

I forgot to mention that my regular store (a regional chain) also has
sales that are available to anybody. So:

Everyday low prices
Sales
Additional discounts for the affinity card

They also have some of the best produce in town. Sadly, their meat
isn't very good, so I go elsewhere for that.

I stopped shopping much at Safeway because of it. I find this interesting,
especially the part about placing products in proximity.
